Here are the rules: Everyone knows how this goes yet again. And it’s really simple. No need to link, or google, or even #Hashtag. Today, many around the country and in the household or other areas, we Americans will be celebrating that holiday of food called Thanksgiving. From the now socially distant Parades to the NFL Games, Dog Shows, or other new traditional ideas that will boost the food day. And yes, there will NOT be any going out to the clubs and shaking off the pounds to get loose for Christmas. But staying home for the house parties while maintaining 6 feet virtually. Or just now, folks going shopping. Really?!
And yes, there will be ongoing constant reminders of the horrors that our Native American brothers and sisters will not participate in this Thanksgiving Day due to the killing of their ancestors outside of a church on a Sunday morning many moons ago. Henceforth, The National Day of Mourning.
But this holiday, yes does have the two words of Be Thankful for the things and ideas we already have. So here in its 13th Anniversary tradition, here is another traditional Stephen’s Spot Thanksgiving Blog of “Be Thankful”. Even though we are battling the Coronavirus, the ongoing of systemic racism, avoiding the Proud Boys, 45 WILL BE GONE from the White House soon, and among others: Break out the tablets, Smartphones, PC’s or laptops. Start reading while maintaining quarantine style of staying put!
Before we begin the blog, let us take the time to reflect our thankfulness of this day and our thankfulness despite of the divisions, the struggles, the arguments, the valid points given, the political angles, the issues of holidays, generational values of lessons, religious or non-religous concerns and problems, and most of of all, our personal values and goals that we want to be better and brighter for all to inspire!

Black History Month 2023: Under Review.

Wanna do Black History every day? You better act like it. Yes, you reading my blog. And the reason is that we may forget in between. And at the same time, there are those who don’t want to hear the history. It’s not just American History, it’s also WORLD HISTORY. I didn’t say “not American History”. NOT JUST AMERICAN HISTORY! Look at other countries like Canada, the UK, and any other country that has abolished slavery in the past and is slowly sampling the thought of celebrating Black History.
Some celebrate it in February, or in October. Makes no difference! It is a celebration that should not be overlooked, whitewashed, debunked, or any negative response or anything that is covered up. We deserve to hear, see, review, comment and also speak about Black History.
Of course, we can summarize it all the time. But again, we sometimes forget! And sometimes, we don’t want to hear it. But listen, it is something that we CANNOT deny! Nobody can’t deny it. No matter how educated or uneducated. We all must learn why Black History Matters!
Ok, let me count the ways here. What were the highlights of my Black History Month Moments of 2023? What really stood out the most?
See these are a few examples that brought my attention to Black History Month of 2023. But yet, the theme was subjected to Black Resistance. Look at some of the examples that the subject was brought about from civil rights to social change. Even in your own community. Black Resistance is not a catch phase, it’s a way of life each day. And I say that because daily, the more negativity about Black History or Black folks, in general, are there in the news, media, online, and others, don’t forget that there were men and women of color that protested and agitated rights and privileges without any harm or concern. No, I take that back. They did that, and they pulled a big risk in order to maintain the cause. We even have examples in a new way in today’s era. Normally, Black Resistance is not a racist angle. It’s a way to bring attention to awareness and concerns about this country’s problems and dilemmas. In speaking of that: Black History, or the concept of it, is being under attack. Why? Why would ANYONE of any race or any GENDER, or ANYBODY attack Black History Month? What is the problem? Oh, because it’s racist. REALLY?!!! Who are these folks? The same folks who root for your favorite teams, attend church, or even went to college/school with you? Or those who have served, yes I’m going there! Or even those who just blabbered their mouths and assume that everyone who celebrates Black History Month is not on their side. Or even a guy like Florida Governor, Ron DeSantis that watered down AP African American courses, and wants to eliminate DEI-related courses in the Sunshine state. Florida’s governor is acting like the Daughters of the Confederacy wanting to approve courses that are not related to racism or trying to indoctrinate those to be woke. Or get this, a principal in Alabama wanted to alter a Black History Month event to talk about the events and figures from 1970 to the present. This reminds me of a Virtual High School here in Wisconsin canceling an idea of an Online Black History Month Event to have regular recreational activities in 2021. How embarrassing. Not for the student, but for the principal, Constance Quade. Yeah, I’m putting her name in this because this is an example of who pulling the strings in trying to make it difficult for the kids to learn. Oh, this is what her response stated:
“Quade also contended there would be an equity issue if the school allowed for a program about Black History Month while not doing anything special for months that celebrate other ethnicities and communities.”
An equity issue?!!! How is a proposed idea of a Black History Month Online program having an issue of equity?!!! That doesn’t make any sense at all!
All of this reminds me of Roland Martin’s book: White Fear. That’s all it is. It’s White Fear that is making Caucasian folks lose their minds. No matter what brings to light an issue or event, or idea from Black Folks, it’s the assumption of fear that white folks always have to counter. And get this, white folks talk about their past events and figures ALL THE DANG TIME! What’s the problem concerning African-Americans telling their stories? Explain. Don’t worry I’ll wait. Now, I’ll say this, for the Women, Asian Americans, Hispanic Americans, Native…I mean Indigenous Americans, and many others who are not African-American, INCLUDING THE LGBTQIA+ if you think that Black History Month is constantly targeted all because of bigoted hatred, guess what: every other heritage month will be in the crosshairs just because many don’t view them as “American.” You need to prepare to defend your historical heritage, your historical months of lessons, and many others, why? It’s because again due to FEAR! That’s all it is. Look, Black History Month has been celebrated for 97 years and it’s not going anywhere. PERIOD! Many will protest it all they want to, but it’s way too late!
Bottom line: Don’t like it? Well better listen up anyway.
And for the Black Folks, Black Queens, and Kings, for all those who say: #BlackHistory365 or “I’m black every month”, or “Black History every day”, let me get this out of the way as I stated earlier, if we want to do Black History “All Day All The Dang Time”, we better act like it. If we are so consumed with our blackness with Historic Implications like buying a new pair of Jordans, or that new whip with the rims on the side, then we better act like our history matters all the time. If we are those who say the slogans, WITHOUT all the history behind them, we will be lost and forgotten. Don’t blame the media, the corporate office, music, or even the white folks. Blame yourselves! For not getting the education of Black History in the house!
It’s almost like those wearing material with I’m black every month and I don’t need a month or whatever, what is that to prove? NOTHING! When Carter Woodson created the occasion in 1926 after hearing the coal miners who were civil war veterans talking about their stories of the war, nobody recorded it. No, there weren’t any digital recorders back then, but there were no recordings picking up their stories. Until the year 1926 came in, there was a chance to do this for a week with his college classmates annually until his death in 1950. Also several years later, Kent State University 1970 ushered in an idea to start Black History Month from January to February. And six years later, Black History Month in February was ushered in even more than we have today in the continuation of telling our stories and events. The Delany Sisters who lived up to 100 years old had a book called, “Having Our Say”. And yet, this is what we in the Black Community must do every time. No matter which month it is.
I recently made a “Stephen’s Spot Black History Quiz” to challenge anyone to see what effect it might have. Did anyone take the quiz? How much do you know? Hope it wasn’t too hard, lol! If it was hard, then that lies in what my black ancestors had gone through tyranny, oppression, persecution, Jim Crow, Slavery, and many other hard-driven concerns that America at times still scared to talk about. The factor that remains is the truth! Now, if you had not taken the quiz and are willing to try your brain power, you know that cheating is not allowed. You would need to do extra studying! No shortcuts, no lifelines, no Social Media, no googling, not even calling for help! None of that! And above all else, the quiz questions were not handpicked by an educator. All by me and my related questions regarding Milwaukee’s History and some African-American-related American questions to summarize. So again, if we want to do Black History every day, we better act like it! No faking out the history. If many are really serious about it, do any of the following:
1) Support a Black Owned Business.
2) Support Black Owned Media. – In Print, Radio, TV, and Digital! It all matters.
3) Donate to a cause, or a fundraiser for a Black Organization like a Fraternity, Sorority, or even Black Veterans Groups like NABVETS.
4) Visit a Black Church. Support their activities in the community. Men’s outings, Women’s activities, events, etc. Or even donate!
5) Visit and/or support a Museum or even a well-known site in your community that features African-American-related exhibits.
6) Support Black Music locally or nationally. Even black movie-making.
7) Know someone in the Black Community that does their own content online like TikTok, or YouTube? Back it up.
8) Donate to Black College Funds for Higher Education to HBCUs.
9) Buy Black Stocks for ownership! This is a MUST!
10) Encourage employment specifically for Black Men and Women looking for work.
11) Know groups that support Black Boys and Girls overall? For education? Back that up fully.
12) Support Black Employees at non-black-owned companies. Let them know!
13) Buy Black Literature. Even the ones that are declared “banned”.
14) Support or subscribe to black podcasting. No matter the subject or idea. Even if it’s Black Introversion.
15) Watch Black Documentaries or News Coverages of an activist, music formation of Hip Hop, or even someone in your community that has or is doing a lot of work. And be prepared to do a summary of book reports or just review it for interest.
16) Have an appreciation day or party in honor of a black employee or volunteer that has spent countless hours of service.
17) For the black men and women who are no longer here on earth, but died years or months earlier, support and maintain a memorial in their memory. Or even dedicate a building, exhibit, a corridor, an auditorium, fundraiser, tech lab, church item, scholarship or a gym after that person’s honor.
These are just a few examples. But there is a sleuth of ideas that can be very interesting to choose from. Choose wisely!
Finally, for those of us who celebrated Black History Month of 2023, it’s cool to do it. And yes, we can reference it at any time, or any place. That and only that keeps it alive! And also, it needs to be defended due to misinformation, conspiracies, lack of education, etc.
Also, to add again: this year marked 97 years. Next year it will be 98, then 99, and in 2026 let’s get some ideas for #BHM2026 or #BlackHistoryMonth100.
And in between: reference, reference, reference! Don’t whitewash, don’t deny, or overlook! As the LGBT folks would say, “We’re here, get used to it!”
