Breaking news out of Milwaukee:

He resigned first. Then rescinded. And today August 31st, 2017 the announcement came this afternoon that Sheriff David Clarke announced his resignation and will officially be gone as of 11:59pm.

As proof, here is his letter as described from the County.

Milwaukee County, rejoice! He will be gone!

In my ongoing commentary in all this, many of us are still getting through the process in which the buzz of Charlottesville from all the backlash that weekend. And yes, ol’ Donnie hadn’t gone far enough to denounce the actions of the KKK, Neo-Nazi’s, and many other Hate Groups that subsequently, were empowered by “taking their country back” and making most of all the “white pride” being a weapon of hate. Oh yes, Donnie is weak. He says that we need to heal as a nation. But the healing of that needs to start with him and supporters alike. But we know that it wouldn’t happen!

OK: Now what is up with these monuments? All the monuments that we’ve been looking at since day one. The Robert E. Lee’s, the Jefferson Davis’, the confederate this and that. All these Confederate Monuments  that are now being taken down or off is now happening.  We heard too many times that these statues and monuments should be in the museums that can stay housed for all to see for the next generation who want to know who these figures were and why they had a hard time to unify the dang country. These figures were constructed and erected sometime after the years that the Civil War ended and mostly they are in the South. There are over 100+ confederate monuments and statues in the United States currently and some as of this moment have been taken down.

QUESTION: Should these Monuments be in Museums? Hold your answer.

Now many are complaining that if you take down a monument of a marker that had housed a well known confederate solider like Robert E. Lee, they are scrapping out part the American History.  That’s almost like taking a person who lives in a neighborhood, but never take the neighborhood out of the person. That’s is also like, yeah you can take a building that used to have drugs, alcohol, prostitution, racial dirty historical commentary hating black people and killing them, is being torn down, but when you build something else to replace it, that might be better. But historians will never forget what used to be BEFORE the building. So in comparison, with these statues and monuments of hate, they can be taken down and distributed in Museums. BUT NEVER FORGET: what was. I hate to be breaking the sensitive bubble but just saying.

CALLOUT: It’s been mentioned before, if these statues were that hateful, why were they weren’t moved or taken down when Obama was President for 8 years?! Let that sink in. Oh that’s right it’s a thing of keeping up with “Southern Heritage”. Nevermind.

Most recently, I was tuning into a radio broadcast of WNOV, yes the black station in Milwaukee. And it featured a story that had a Confederate monument in my homestate of Wisconsin. I’m not joking. You might be saying to yourself: WAIT, WHAT? Wisconsin had a Confederate Monument?! Really? Here is the featured story, from June of 2015. As we all know that Wisconsin was a Union state during the Civil War. Check out the site called “Iron Brigader”, or do a search called, “The Confederate Cemetery in Madison, Wisconsin”. I’m reading this article for the first time. And the thing that struck me out of the story was the fact that I had no idea, no iota that this existed in the state of Wisconsin. Never in my near 41 years living in the Badger State I knew that. The story summarizes that the use of the Cemetery was the burial place of the Union Soldiers that died in the Civil War. It also summarized that part of the Cemetery was known as “Confederate Rest” in which that 140 of the Confederate Soldiers whom were POW’s was buried in the area. Before that, majority of the Confederate Soldiers (approx. 1,000 plus) that were captured, were sent to Prairie Du Chien, and then to Madison. Many of them also were diagnosed with Measels, Mumps, Pneumonia, not enough food or medicine for the prisoners and many died because of it. Also some the prisoners were transported to Camp Randall (the same Camp Randall where the Wisconsin Badgers play on the UW-Madison Campus) for medications and supplies to receive treatments. Additional before Camp Randall was the house that many of the Big 10 feared, it was a training ground for the then Union Volunteer Soldiers during the Civil War. Now you wonder why Camp Randall Stadium is a “battleground” on Saturday afternoons! The story also summarized about a woman, Alice Waterman who was southern born that moved to the city to care for the Cemetery that housed the dead soldiers. She put her own financial needs to care for the graves and markers to maintain them. She is also buried at the cemetery towards the front of the site.

So again, I had NOOOOOOO idea that the state of Wisconsin had a Confederate section of the State in the most liberal city. Had no idea. And now, the Mayor of the City, Paul Soglin is calling for the confederate monuments or signs to be taken down or removed to the Historical Societies for further summaries in the future.

Yes, these monuments would be taken down for a reason. You probably heard about Germany for example that many of the Nazi stuff are out of the way because they want to move forward as a country. Here in the U.S., we are just getting started. And I’m aware that the Daughters and Sons of the Confederate Families are not happy with the monuments or statues being removed. Ironically, some descendants are favoring them to be taken down and to be put in the Museums.

We shall see.

Oh, in the next series: Michael the Black man must be called out. Literally.

Oh yes. I have to talk this. Really I have too.

I’m sure that many in America already knows about the deal that was signed when Foxconn, a Taiwan company that landed a deal that would boost Wisconsin’s job numbers concerning employment. We all know that when Scott Walker boasted a plan to have the 250,000 jobs to happen, actually DID NOT WORK. I told you so, Wisconsin. The same words, I told you so rang out so many times I can’t event count. And this was about 6 years ago. Now with the jobs for Foxconn according the sources that it would attract about 13,000 jobs. And it’s going to come to the area of Racine or Kenosha Counties. And just like Amazon, they will NOT come to the Milwaukee Metro Area. And the fact is that yes, when Foxconn inked the deal there had some concerns about also about the taxation part. This deal per se might cost us taxpayers to be on the hook for the next 15 years. How is this deal is going to be beneficial for taxpayers like me for the next couple of years?! Like really, Madison. Plus, Foxconn has been in bad blood in the last couple of years. To the residents of Pennsylvania, we have read about your dilemma about the plant that hasn’t been built. And many of us in Wisconsin are fully aware about it the promises that you were to be given, but didn’t work. And the result was bad broken politics. We get it.

I’ll bet many probably thought, really Wisconsin?! Have you been screwed up already? Oh and other thing, many think that this would seal up Scott Walker’s deal as a way to get reelected for 2018.

Now since the Foxconn company is coming to the state, what will become of us whom don’t have transportation to get to the jobs? We know that Amazon can’t do it alone, but many of us don’t have a jeep, a truck, a car, or a Go-Kart to get to Foxconn every day? Think about it. And what will the state black residents have a say in this?

Oh wait! We had an idea that was seemed very VERY interesting. It was a High Speed Rail Train that would have linked Milwaukee and Madison. You do remember that we HAD over 800 million dollars stacked up for the Talgo Trains and the jobs? Is all that memory coming back? And what did our glorious Governor Numb Nuts did with that money and the jobs and the trains? He gave it all away! The state got sued due to a breach of contact and it was THE biggest blunder ever! Wisconsin, you should have kept the trains. But you failed to follow the advice of Scott Walker. And those like Robin Vos and Alberta Darling. And did I mention that part of which of that dumb decision was geared towards racism? Let that sink in! After 6 years. That was also to help integrate the region. And many were worried that black folks would go to Jefferson County for coffee and donuts. Really?! And to do the math, Wisconsin’s black population is around 8%.

Oh, now that there is talk about using a Canadian Railway track to combine the Twin Cities, Milwaukee and Chicago for a Intercity Rail Route with Amtrak. That seems like an idea, but how is THIS is going to get paid? And the thing is, you got this Foxconn plant coming up, and they need some kind of transportation for Freight and also what about those who don’t drive, that live in far places, how are they are going to get to work? You see what I’m saying? Yeah let that REALLY sink in! And now Walker wants a train! So hypocritical.

Our Republican state hood “friends” really messed up. They realized it. Talgo at the time could have benefited ALOT of jobs. I visited the Talgo plant 5 years ago in the black community in the 2700 block at Townsend Street area, and wanted to see the HSR trains up close. They were good. With all the digital stuff and everything. Plus they worked hard on them! Our people. And the State shamefully gave it all up. All because they thought the tax payers would be on the hook for the vehicles. Or the personal favorite: boondoggles! “No one will ever ride it.” Um………you really think that Badger State? Better change your tune and repent. I hear mostly about the value of the trains on Black Radio like WNOV than 620 WTMJ or 1130 WISN. And let remind our Republican fans, not many in the state doesn’t have their own transportation! And Foxconn wants in. We’re unprepared. Matter of fact were unprepared in getting some of the highways and roads done. Which was LOOOONG talked about for years! Let that also sink in! Why you asked? Too many dang politics messing up. And dang is not a bad word.

At least the Milwaukee Streetcar is still on point.

All of this in my view needs the reexamination of what we really want to have in the state. And of course there will be questions. Like already as I speak, Foxconn is already being talked about but it should be talked about more in the areas of Milwaukee’s north side that can get more insight about what is going on. Especially when the state’s transportation system is on one leg losing to political standpoints so many times over!

I have to address this concern. Crazy Drivers. The type of driver that cut infront of you in the city. Always weaving in and out. Always seeing that one vehicle that starts at the traffic light being the car is on the right and pulling ahead after the green light shows up. They are just being inconsiderate of the traffic laws and not giving no one the respect on the road!

And some of that, leads to accidents!

On Facebook, of my newspaper columnist for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel  posted pictures on the site that dealt with one vehicle having an accident. And the vehicle was tipped on its side. It was so crazy that the vehicle was infront of one of my connectional UMC churches here in the city.  In summary these crazy drivers in all, they are winning. I repeat: THEY ARE WINNING. They are winning because not just because they are young and stupid, they are winning because there are not enough speed traps or police that can actually spot them and track them down with tickets. I had a incident when myself and my mother were going north to our dentist and this one car, a Buick with a AAA Wisconsin Licence Plate gave me the finger twice because I used my horn on him twice for cutting infront of me on purpose. And it was a black male driver. Not only he got away but he was weaving back and forth in between lanes going the same direction. YOUNG AND STUPID!

I also seen drivers whom are always on the right side of the lanes, crossing over to the left middle lane cutting infront of the drivers. Again, these are young black male drivers who don’t have no FORMAL DRIVERS TRANING out of respect and just coming up with their own rules and no respect for seasoned drivers whom like me are real people and have families and friends. Do these fools know this? Nope.

I’ll bet that many are asking, are drivers like this all the time in Milwaukee? My question is are there are young drivers whom are all stupid to not obey the traffic laws and get away with murder without insurance? Hmmmm…..And it doesn’t matter where you live in this country.  Knowing that is not about young black drivers who disrespect the traffic laws. Other folks do it also and they get away with this crap like it’s a game. This is not a game folks. You want to drive crazy, go get or play Need For Speed or Grand Theft Auto for all I care. Those are games. Out on the street: NO GAME!

Other that that, don’t be surprised if any of the vehicles get those cameras that record every driving date that comes up. And it’s legal. When they come up, guess what’s going to happen? Either their DL’s will be removed or they have to give up driving their parents’ cars. And if you parents have young drivers who drive and cut infront of drivers in traffic, you WILL BE RESPONSIBLE! Simply because, they are driving your cars! Be responsible adults and take the keys from them.

Time to break out the cellphone cameras, dash cameras and take the photos and send them to the Police. Enough playing around.

End of rant.

America:

As we know by Sunday Afternoon, we lost the legendary Alwyn Lopez Jarreau. Or to many, Al Jarreau. So far this week, we have heard tributes from News One, to those playing the music that gravitated us to hear.

Many of us are griveing and shocked that he already announced his retirement after 50 years in music. But also passed on way after that. At age 76 years old, he made himself well known.

Yes, he had to go west to get well known after he got his master’s degree in Iowa. And the saying goes, the rest is history. But there is ONE caveat that is part of this. One word: Milwaukee. The same Milwaukee that many don’t want to come back all because of whatever. More on that later.

Al got his start in my hometown of Milwaukee in church. He was a graduate of Lincoln High School (now called Lincoln Center of the Arts) from the class of 1958. Lincoln High School was a rival school to North Division High School which was way before Rufus King and Riverside University High School’s rivarly were thought about. His parents were in ministry and a pianist in the church where he got his start. From his high school days to his career in the music game as I said before, Al was getting noticed.

He had his share of hits from “We’re In this Love Together”, “Mornin”, “What you do to me”, “Boogie Down”, a theme song from the 80’s TV show, “Moonlighting”,  to  “In My Music.” Oh, he did a Christmas Album too. Plus he did a song in 1976 about his hometown, “Milwaukee” from his album “Glow” mentioning his move out west to California with the Old Milwaukee Road in between.

Speaking of the songs, and yes many of you went to his concerts over the years. And most definitely that Al did Milwaukee gigs at Potowanomi Bingo for his homecoming concerts. Even singing the National Anthem at a UW- Milwaukee Panthers Game.

Yes Americans, he followed his dream as summarized on the Because of them we can Facebook Page. BUT……He did came back to Milwaukee for not only other music concerts, he came back to visit the students in the schools to give them some knowledge and advice about their gift of music. Most recently, he was at The Milwaukee High School of the Arts, (for you MPS Alumni old heads, West Division High School) providing that notion. He also expressed in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, that the kids today in Milwaukee aren’t getting the same music opportunities as him back in his MPS days. Yes, Al Jarreau was a MPS Alumni member. Plus he hoped that the kids would get music in the schools to maintain just as science, technology, engineering, and yes math. Music is just as important in the schools like Gym Classes or sport teams. Period. I am a living witness to this as a music dude myself blowing Saxophones since 1989. 7th Grade. So yes, Music/Arts in Public Schools does matter.

Now I want to say this: For you fans, he was a great musician. For us in Milwaukee, he was our native son. Hope you all respect that.

Now for us in Milwaukee: if we can get the stuff lit in orange,  or purple for Prince, we need to light up our landmarks in Al’s favorite color in symbolic of him. I’m dead serious. If we say we love him or admire him, light up Miller Park, his schools, City Hall, the Art Museum, Summerfest, or any other Landmark in honor of him. Light up all the Milwaukee Landmarks. Period.

For Summerfest: we know the 50th Anniversary is coming in June. Expecting all fest folks to come out. I would like to see a all star Milwaukee tribute in honor of Al Jarreau! I’m calling the locals who follow Al’s music, to the famous Milwaukee folks like Eric Benet, Speech from Arrested Development, to Tank even a Core DJ  that is really known famous and is Milwaukee Born, get yourselves to Summerfest this Summer and get this tribute thing started. If I can think of a good Summerfest 50th Anniversary Celebration idea, this could be it. So I’m challenging the Community, the Landmarks, the musicians, the famous fans like all over, and even us at heart, get that set up! If any relatives or family members are reading this, ponder this for a moment after your bereavement.

Not only that, expand that energy back to the students. They are looking at this and one day in the next era, they might pick up the advice that Al Jarreau said and keep playing. Speaking of that: we all know that Al Jarreau’s Homegoing is going to be private. And since the donation factor of his cause is still open, I urge all supporters to go to this website: UPAF.org. For you folks outside of Milwaukee, it’s the United Performing Arts Fund. It’s been around since 1967 in the recognitions of Milwaukee’s Arts of Music, Dance, Theater, and many of the fine arts that had produced locally. Matter of fact, read about the mini summary of the organization here:

https://upaf.org/what-is-upaf/

Let’s keep the name alive for him. Al Jarreau has given us 50 years of what he knew and let’s give him some love back in his memory!

I have been approached about a recent article this week on Facebook. Last time on the blog, I written about a TV program that has been on the rise within the last 5 years. This program I talked about was 414 Video Spotlight. The show that comes on every Saturday Night and Sunday Night after 12:00am. The show is filmed here in Milwaukee, and yes for the 5 years it has garnered attention of local musicians that are getting noticed and still getting noticed here in Milwaukee and parts of Wisconsin.

Last year, (and I forgot to add this to the list of the good) 414 Video Spotlight’s owners opened another chapter to add a studio in the city to do the shows and of course showcase the local talent. Remember when I said that Milwaukee needs a black owned studio? Well guess what, the studio is here. And it’s the first African-American Owned Broadcast Studio in the entire state.

But what I’m talking about is not music. Nor the videos produced or summarized. It’s about a recurring theme about a caller leaving racists voicemails. This is been happening, according to the owners since October, and the same racist caller has been doing it since. If anyone you know who has a Social Media connection on Facebook with one of the owners, Melvin James, he posted a video of the recording that was far more racist and threatening!

WARNING: If you are of age on Facebook: BE ADVISED! The messages are not for the weak at heart. It is graphic and has implications of the use of violent threats.

We all know that Milwaukee is the most segregated city in the United States. That is not a joke. Plus I should add that the country we call The United States of America has racism in the DNA of the country. Way before Donald Trump was even thought of. We know.

But as for the story, check out the summary of the report via Fox 6 News:

Now I’m assuming that many have heard the message about the threats. For those whom are not aware, Wisconsin’s African American Population is around 8%. The Milwaukee Metro Area is under 600,000 people with about 30% of the population is African-American. And again when it comes to segregation and racism: Wisconsin is no stranger to it. It has been for a while over 40 years and it is still a hot button topic that many don’t want to return or move away from. However the issue of racism in America is still a topic.

What was displayed here after I’ve listented to the uncensored recording of that on Facebook, my reaction of that was just disgusted. A cowardly caller as I like to call it, called into the studio and addressing all this mess about he “represents” those who don’t like black people and all they good for is catching ball, dance, hanging from trees, living in “cribs” and etc. Last time I checked we done more than that. Matter of fact, black folks are WELL MORE than just those whom think that is all we do is drink 40’s, catching balls, dance and others.

I haven’t met Mr. James, but there is one we have in common. We’re former students of John Marshall High School and the thing is, when I see an MPS Alum doing his or her thing no matter what it is, it’s about appreciation. The fact of matter is, many have this misunderstanding about us MPS Alums doing positive things. While many of YOU Wisconsinites and Greater Milwaukee Folks may not like black folks doing stuff like this, you better appreciate that it’s not about doing jail time or ending up in the grave all because of some thought of going after someone with a AK-47.

This is kind of amusing: I was on the Fox 6 Facebook Page, and there has to be that one White dude on the comment section about asking, where are the white owned networks? That was foul. That dude should know darn well that many in the TV world owners and network media that the majority of them are own by Caucasians. Dude was drunk and high! Black folks, when white folks ask that ridiculous question, give them the reality check. When BET was created 37 years ago today, it was about addressing the news that NBC, CBS, FOX, ABC and many others wouldn’t address even more concerning black folks. Now along with BET News, there’s TVONE, Aspire, UMC (not the United Methodist Church) OWN and others that can cater to the majority of African-Americans. Hell, I’ve been saying this for years. The proof is in the blogs. Look it up!

Having an African-American Broadcast Studio is not being racist. Having an African-American Radio Station like WNOV in Milwaukee is not racist either as having African-American newspapers, magazines, blogs, columnists, that gives perspectives on black issues everyday!

It’s really interesting that the majors or submajors have all this and that, but still don’t have that black perspective on deck. Until the recent stuff happens, the company has to shift focus on getting that black perspective. The WWE went through this years ago, in trying to recruit future wrestlers of the company that were black folks. They did and some of them won championships. True!

But regarding the recent acts of racism, and racist threats, it will be addressed and already the Milwaukee Police Department is looking at the matter.

But in the meantime: support the idea of 414 Video Spotlight!

And the last thing I have to ask: I will say this to ask humbly, will you miss Obama?

Happy New Year!

Let’s get the 2017 thing started.

I get it folks. Yes, I have to say the words either “President Donald Trump.” Or for now, “President-Elect Donald Trump.” I know he won the thing on Tuesday by beating Hillary Clinton and the then Clinton Machine that got so much love in the 1990’s. I get it folks. And already there are protests in different parts of the country that did not want this man to represent this country for the next four years. If we thought that George W. Bush was bad, I guess we haven’t seen anything yet. Nothing.

I have to ask this question again and specifically to those who are white and a woman. Plus others too no matter what: Why do you feel Donald Trump was your pick after the mess he had to say about my culture of African-Americans, calling out the Mexicans, or Latinos, or even Muslims or even things that many don’t or will never understand?! That is a definite must to ask! Even if you abandoned Hillary Clinton like trash.  If you are a supporter of Trump that also falls into the categories of these different areas: I don’t know what to say about you! Your minds must be in the gutter, especially if you’re black. Yeah I said it!

I had to look as the meeting of the minds when he and President Obama talked in the Oval Office of the White House. And I know that it was a strange bedfellows moment that the man sitting next to Obama insulted his birth, his choice of past religion and many others. But the ONE thing that struck out of my mind when Trump said that he “Respects Obama.” Hold up, I had to hear this. Of all the insult, jab, punch, making him produce the Birth Certificate, assumption of his “Muslim” status is now giving the benefit of the doubt that he respects the 44th President of the United States. Now you so-called Trump Supporters probably had your heads exploded when he said that. Admit the truth!

Now all the hype is still going. Oh that hype of hate of the so-called supporters of Donald Trump is ranging from the scenes of the KKK planning a Victory Parade in December (like really) all the way to those writing “Make America White Again” or “Black Lives Don’t Matter and your Vote doesn’t either”. Or those in school chanting White Power holding a Trump Pence Sign. Or even that having “N8ggers don’t come to my school” and the so-called usual “Go back to Africa.” All of this is really reveling the true mark of these silent majority whites, these Evangelical whites, these Housewives that live at home, even some dumb college students now saying or thinking of it, you name it there it is! Even some backwoods rednecks have said the same thing. And Donald Trump talks about unifying the country. I don’t by it. At all.

If Donald Trump really says what he commented on, by unifying the country in all, he better start with his inner circle and those that SUPPORT the inner circle. But we know that might not happen.

On an other note: think back to the Election Day. And here in Milwaukee, think back to this number: 41,000. That was the amount of voters that was LESS than 2012 when President Obama won. Most of that less thing: was due to one thing, Voter ID. That same Voter ID that was, I’ll use this term, RAMMED DOWN OUR THROATS per se all because trying to get a ballot.

CALLOUT: Can anyone say “Voter Suppression?”

That is what all that hype was about to suppress the votes among Minorities, and causing this confusion of staying home on Election Day. It was SHAMEFUL then and it’s SHAMEFUL now! I had to do that so many times (as ordered) as a poll worker on that same day. And also part of that was the reason why Hillary Clinton was not the winner of this past Tuesday. Folks here in Milwaukee, in this Blue City in the now Red State, we need to be more engaged about this voting process. We probably didn’t read enough of the stances that had been written all this time. That was failure! We have to be up on our VOTING GAME even more now. We know the requirements in all, but just got to keep it on one accord to get it done. PERIOD! We’re not doing that as much. Some of us know it, but the rest needs to know!

All this week also the use of racism is at another notch with part of this Election. And don’t dare remind me of what year this is. No matter what era, generation, year, month, date, place, neighborhood, region, Red State, Blue State, how Democratic, how Republican, how Independent, how single, how married, how widowed, how spiritual, how patriotic, how introverted, how extroverted, how ambiverted, how giving, how not giving, how your sex life is, how your health matter is, if you got a job, a good doctor or dentist, conscious, how proud to black or white, a proud man or proud woman, transgender, gay, straight, career working, unemployed, underemployed, the number of degrees, how Presidential, or not, or whatever it is, even Progressive, Independent, Green Party Rep, or Conservative: RACISM IS STILL HERE!

And for those that this is about race baiting, it’s not. It’s about addressing a long sting of racism that is still in America’s DNA. If Donald Trump has any sense about this matter, in regards to him wanting to Uniting the Country, he needs to call out the bigots who voted up for him and clown these fools of them as a sample: “this is not what I have ran on, and I was wrong”.

But ……….he won’t!

And if those that are parents whom let their kids do this:

Or this:

Parenting must be revamped. Like seriously!

Breaking News out of Milwaukee:

One of our well known voices in the Milwaukee Community has passed. If you haven’t heard the name of Eric Von then maybe the ears weren’t open. He was the voice in Milwaukee’s media for several of years that was on our TV’s and also mostly, Radio. There were times that I listened to him on the radio in which the topics ranged from the news, sports and health were on point. No question that his voice or commentary was indeed legendary just as OC White in his hey day. Either on 1290 WMCS or recently, his segment on WNOV of “The Eric Von Show” that comes on at 7:00am, two hours before “The Forum” appears on air.

I had the opportunity to meet him 2 years ago at my old High School of John Marshall. Now it’s called “Milwaukee Marshall High School” but still it’s John Marshall ANYWAY! The occasion was the Alumni Reception that was featuring the former students and guests that meet up prior to the 2014 Graduation Ceremony. Eric was with his wife, Faithe Colas who was the special guest speaker for the ceremony. Plus also, Faithe (class of 79 Alumni) was the recipient of the John Marshall High School’s Alum of the Year Award. And yes her pic is in the school for all to see.  Plus also I had to play the official photographer for the Alumni to capture pictures like this:

ssp_marshallalumnireception2014

Now just to point out here: Eric is pictured on the far right.

After the ceremony we went to Saz’s on State Street for the followup to our fellowship. Eric was sitting across from me. Faithe was on the same side on an angle. I like everyone else introduced myself, with me being the youngest Alumni Board Member in the house. We conversated just the basic stuff of work and volunteering. But to hear him and be in the prsensence was just that: priceless.

Yes, I’ve meet the man that we know. And black Milwaukee knows as well.

For the lessons this week, yes Eric was cool. No matter what subject or topic he was on, he was on it. Plus he was a US Veteran that served in the Air Force.

One of the things of his work as we know, it’s called Brain, Brawn and Body. His work and awareness about African-American Men and their families to maintain the needs of health. Yes black men, as we know doctors and us don’t mix. But we have to face the music sometimes of getting back with the Medics. Even me. But don’t quote me on that.

Another was with the election connections. He was featured on a show on Channel 12’s “It’s Your Vote” in dealing with the voting issues that the voters in Milwaukee faced at the time. Even Milwaukee Black Voters as usual.

He was also featured on other shows like “Black Nouveau” which comes on our Public Broadcast Station here in Milwaukee of Channel 10. And for that was discussing the concerns and issues in Milwaukee’s Black Community. Black Nouveau is still on point today with issues and news that the community is still informed.

In 2003, he was a Campaign Co-Director in lieu of one of the past Elections that propelled Tom Barrett to his first mayoral bid for the city.

When the day of September 8th came when Eric’s death came up: it was like a shock. I kept reading my Facebook Newsfeeds to see if this was real. When you get those notices of a well known figure around your community that died, usually it’s a hoax via Social Media. BUT……this was no hoax. Eric Von really did die at his home in the Sherman Park Community. The next day, WNOV was really focused on him, his life and work. I was listening to his segment and The Forum and let me tell you: it was sad, but it was a time to celebrate him of what he brought to us over the years. No matter if it was his days at 1290, or WNOV. The callers kept calling the station to offer their condolences and sympathies. Even former 1290 Personalities  that called in to do the same thing. And those that used to rival WNOV were also called in to equal the messages of those offering condonlences.

I will admit, it will be hard to replace him on the radio. But I think that with all of this, the WNOV Family; no, the remaining WNOV family will be fine. It will take time, but still will be fine.

This coming week, there will be a Community Memorial Celebration for Eric at Marquette University’s Alumni Union. And the date will be September 14th.

I was going to wait after the Olympics to blog again. But the reason for this, the Northside of Milwaukee was up in total anger with fires and tension. And to connect with social media for those of where to go and meetup and havoc. How stupid.

I had to break away from watching the Olympics in which was a historical performance, to see the ironic tension of looting, fires, deep tension and many other concerns that plagued this city. 44th and Auer is where the shootings started. A 23 year old was shot and killed in the view of the Milwaukee Police Department. And yes after that, all hell broke loose. And a weapon was stolen with 23 shots rang out. And bricks being thrown.

The hell that broke loose, also continued with bus shelters, and street lights near Sherman and Auer were damaged. The BP Gas Station in the same area where a protest happened a month ago: burned. Right near Sherman Park. Further blocks away, more fires happened at a Jet Beauty Store near 35th and Burleigh. Also a O’Reilly Auto Parts in the same area, engulfed in flames. Nearby, a BMO Harris Bank right near my old Middle School had smoke issues in the building . All of this many feel that the black community has not had no love. And the thing is, it’s a warning sign.

Now I know that many had to go in about Milwaukee in which like comparing this riot to a championship win. Or there are those who don’t care about the city and having this shrugging shoulders mixed with pinned up frustrating matters. For all those who think have the answers and are acting foolish, SIT DOWN and Shut up! Clearly those don’t have all the answers. I don’t give a care if you transplanted to Texas or Atlanta or the East Coast, or the West Coast or a well known international region, you’re living there now. But I’ll bet none of you never actually really care about this city known as Milwaukee!

If so, PROVE ME WRONG! Send a long distance donation to your old schools and charitable functions you left behind.

Many of you have this noting about “oh well that’s Milwaukee for you when the violence happens.” Really?! Is that what those think?  Seriously? All you have to do is go on Twitter, Facebook in all and with the negative remarks on the likes of CNN commenters saying “yeah tear down that stuff, you bunch of hoodlums!” If many of you so-called Americans say that, I consider that being unpatriotic! And many folks know it!

Now for those of us here in Milwaukee. Those of us who work, pay our taxes, contribute to our causes, we need to rise more. We need to rise up like a freaking phoenix. We can have the clergy coming out, the community leaders, the fraternity, the sorority, the employed, the unemployed, the underemployed, the neighbor that looks out, the neighborhood leaders, the hardcore activist, the conscious, the not so-conscious, the in between, the Introverted, Extroverted, Ambiverted, the Unsung Heroes, and many other categories: Rise like the Phoenix! It’s time to do it. For the police, firefighters, EMTs, your are in this as well! We pay our taxes, so your salary stays on point.

Just the other day, a day after all the burnings, I took a trip near the corner of Sherman and Burleigh and my reaction to the damage in person of the BP Gas Station was just shocked. The anger. The concern. And began to ask why this. Why would ANYONE like this would destroy a Gas Station?! Why? I went to my Nikon Camera and like everyone else, I snapped about several pictures that was like this:

And also, if many have not guessed it, a stream of cars on Sherman Boulevard going south and north was nearly jammed packed. The same with vehicles going East on Burleigh Street. Television Trucks of ABC7, WKOW, CNN and many others from the different parts of America came out to cover this tradgey that has sparked my home city’s unrest. Also, there folks preaching the word on Megaphones on both corners. Water was on sale on the corner where Sherman Park is along with individals giving away cupcakes and free hugs.

SSP - PrayforMilwaukee2

As I left the area, I driven North on 44th Street towards Auer Avenue, this was the area that the shooting began. And plus it was nearly jammed packed with cars and also residents and ministers as Salvation Army Chaplians.

The day after, I went further east to take pictures of the 7th District Milwaukee Police Station where it was roped off with Caution tape and boarded up. Also, the BMO Bank was boared up after it was struck by fire. A MetroPCS store was boared up after looting as well as a restaurant of KFC/Taco Bell was broken up with glass. Nearby an O’Reilly AutoParts store was destroyed by fire as well as a Jet Beauty Store not only looted, but also was destroyed by fire as well.

Ladies and Gentlemen of America, this was the experience that Milwaukee endured during that weekend of unrest. And like many others in the past, it was an unrest concern that never should have happened. The Sherman Park Neighborhood is a legendary neighborhood. I know so because my older sister and I used to reside in the area between the years 2000 and 2006. We resided on Grant Boulevard in a church parsonage in which was near Center Street. I used to catch the 22 MCTS bus to go either to work, school, shopping or church. Nearby, there was a barbershop where I used to go to get my haircuts. An organization called ASHA Family Services is in that area along with the Ritz Fish Market near the corner of 38th and Center, and it was and is owned by my family members. My old elementary school, 38th Street School, (now under the Milwaukee College Prep) is in that area. Washington High School, my high school’s rival is in the area. The homes in the area are almost legendary with years going back to about 100 years old. This is what I learned back then and understand now. Plus also, the Sherman Park Neighborhood is an active diverse neighborhood and still is. And plus I’m a northside born resident.

But I want to go back to this shooting. And I know that many are asking: what compelled this act of shooting that lead to this burning of several buildings, cars, houses, and others that had NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS MATTER?! We know already that Milwaukee is the well known factor of being the most hyper-segregated city in the United States. That is part of the things that goes mostly heard and widely examined in the entire state of Wisconsin. Many have this notion of leaving Milwaukee and go to places like Atlanta just to get away from the violence and racism. And also talking smack about the city in which they failed to help out. Oh trust me, we had a whole lotta folks have felt that way!  But many of us WHO ARE STILL HERE, are upholding our accountabilty of our taxes, our jobs, our way of life, and purpose of being more engaged to solve the problems of our well being. What we have expereinced here most recently, is nothing more what happened 49 years ago before I was born: when Milwaukee had the race riots of 1967 and the black community back then was going up in flames. That area is now called MLK Drive in Bronzeville. And the trauma of being in the predictament of the segregated climate still lingers even today. Not just in Milwaukee. But that same symptom also exist like racism in America’s DNA. I don’t give a crap where you are in America, that racism DNA has not gone away. Even after 240 years.

But in this era, the 23 year old Syville Smith, whom had a CCW Licence, and was armed with a stolen weapon from Waukesha, was shot to death. Nevermind the history of his life, or the crimes he may have done, his killer per se happens to appear as a officer of the Milwaukee Police Department. Many of us in Milwaukee looked at the person’s picture on Facebook. And according to a family member of the victim, it was known that they go way back to High School here in Milwaukee. Try Pulaski High School, and no disrespect to the Pulaski Rams in all. Plus W.E.B. Dubois High School in the Marshall Complex.

SSP - PrayforMilwaukee9

Other points, there are those around Milwaukee should have kept their mouths closed. One of them is Sheriff David Clarke. The reason being he kept hinting about the use of the National Guard to aid the Police Officers during the Unrest incidents. And in his own words having the gaul to blame the single mothers of Milwaukee for the incidents and and of course: Black Lives Matter. REALLY SHERIFF CLARKE?! He must be high on something to say that. And plus, Black Lives Matter or his words “Black Lies Matter” were not the reasons why some buildings in Milwaukee went up in flames. Sheriff Clarke already embarasses himself and Milwaukee County hanging out with the likes of Donald Trump. HOW DEPRESSING OF HIM! Yes he’s still the Sheriff, but in the next two years he and another guy, Scott Walker  MUST BE VOTED OUT! And part of the blame that Sheriff Clarke has his job is because of those in the Black Community voted up for him to have another  4 years. Why? Because he’s black. I think the Black Community needs to rethink their votes for Clarke. Speaking of Walker, dude had to come to a black church in Milwaukee not to far from the BP Gas Station. Let me remind Milwaukee one thing: Walker doesn’t give a da*n about Milwaukee! He doesn’t care about the Black Community, nor the needs. Remember the High Speed Rail Train that was BUILT in the Black Community? Go back to that. That was derailed by HIM due to one word: politics. Now he wants in to be supportive of the Black Community. Really Walker?! Oh please! And additional group of folks outside of the city, who don’t even in live in Milwaukee had the nerve to put the blame on President Barack Obama. Obama is not the blame for this! So stop it non-Milwaukeeans!

But of all of the folks who seemed to be in supportive the most of Milwaukee, is Mayor Tom Barrett. Call me crazy, but he is. Another is the still Wisconsin Senate Rep from the 4th District, Lena Taylor. Ashanti Hamilton, President of the Common Council, Alderman Russell Stamper II, and Alderwoman Chantia Lewis are just a few. The curfew in Milwaukee under 18 is in effect. Sherman Park closes at 6pm and roped off with orange. When it switches to the MPS Curfew starting September 1st that’s every night. And that was activated this past Sunday.

Speaking of Sunday, I was in church and during our “joys and concerns” we highlighted the concerns of the Unrest Issue. One of my millennial church members talked about the incident in which it was witnessed in person. She indicated that her younger brother was about 2 cars behind the shooter’s car going east on Burleigh near the Jet Beauty Store, and indicated that if one of those bullets hit him, he would have been gone. She also comforted an Police Officer near the Beauty Supply Store who was going though that high alertness of concern of another citizen. The last thing she said: God Bless You. And a tear was starting to roll on the Officer. I just had to tell you that because whenever I hear about church folks being all judgmental or acting hypocritical, NOT ALL OF THEM ARE LIKE THIS. And my church member is a single mother in her 20’s.And is a prayer warrior in my church under the United Methodist banner. Is she always like this? Just maybe you need to visit The New St. James Community Church UMC in Milwaukee and find out. And plus the setting of our church is in a County Park Pavilion on Milwaukee’s East Side. And the church is the first African-American United Methodist Church established in the city since 1949.

SSP - PrayforMilwaukee8

Just today, the ATF was sprung into action to survey the damages. And it was announced that a reward of $10,000 for anyone who knew what happened and also those responsible for those alleged damages. For all you snitches in Milwaukee: FESS UP! Don’t go into Stop Snitching Mode like cowards back in the day. Whenever the Federal Government comes on the scene, it’s is a huge concern. The sticks got a whole wide larger than before. This is not a game! It’s real lives were and are still at stake!

Milwaukee is 170 years old. And in the 170 years it faced open gaps of unemployment, segregation, violence, arson, race riots, shootings, festivals going in and out (African World Festival) educational values questioned and answered, underemployment of applicants/jobs, and many other concerns and factors. However in the 170 years, Milwaukee remains a underestimated city that has some good in it. We can talk about Summerfest, the Art Museum, The Pabst Theater, Riverside Theater, the newly soon to be Lakefront Gateway Area, the soon to be Northwestern Mutual Tower, the other festivals that do go past Summerfest, Garfield Days, Juneteenth Day Parades, Bronzeville Arts, riding Bublr Bikes, and soon to be construction of the New Bucks Arena and the Streetcar.

Why has Milwaukee been like this?

It’s not Chicago, Atlanta, LA, San Francisco, Seattle, Texas, Florida, and other cities and states that mostly “knows” black folks. Milwaukee as medium-sized as it is, its well known for Harley-Davidson, MillerCoors, our County Parks, and past relations with being the Beer Capital of the World, Bowling Capital of the world at one time, or known in the past for shows like Happy Days and Laverne and Shirley. Oh, did I mention that The Blues Brothers, Public Enemies, and  Transformers were filmed here? Famous Americans like Bud Selig, Eric Benet, Al Jarreau, Gene Wilder, George Tillman Jr, Charlotte Rae, Speech, Tank were all born here. The Core DJ’s a well known DJ organization is known for DJ’s around the world, but it was started in Milwaukee. Wrestling has a history here. From AWA of Da’ Crusher, to the birth of Austin 3:16. And also currently in the WWE, Austin Aries is a born resident.

Milwaukee does have a Urban Scene that is so underground that is hard to get airplay on a V100, a Jammin 98.3, KISS FM, and others. Also Milwaukee does have some support of it’s genre of Hip Hop, but the fans say that the City has haters because the lack of support. However, not all Milwaukeeans don’t listen to rap music! Some listen to Polka or other genres. But every ethnic group has their own thing.Well known here: Ray Nitti, Rusty P’s, Charles Walker Band, Element, and Coo Coo Cal just to name a few.

For radio, we know WTMJ. But I know 1290 when it was the talk of the town. WNOV as many know us the lone wolf of black radio that many folks still listen to. Plus also there are podcasts, and other radio stations like WUWM that is well known for based on UW-Milwaukee.

Milwaukee to me is misunderstood. Very misunderstood. Our education system isn’t that bad. The Milwaukee Public Schools is legendary around here and it’s the same age as the city.I am a product to call myself an MPS Alum because of the schools of 38th Street School, Jackie Robinson Middle School and John Marshall High School. Not only that, I come from a line of educators that taught in MPS in my family!  Some of our famous folks are MPS Alums also. Our Colleges of the Milwaukee Area Technical College, Mount Mary, Marquette University, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee are fully known educational institutions. I’m a product of the Milwaukee Area Technical College which I got an Associates Degree in the year 2000. The program was Printing and Electronic Publishing in which I got my hands dirty in Bindery and Offset Press.

Part of Milwaukee’s history was the tanneries. Pfister and Vogel, Albert & Trostels should ring a bell. And some of our family members used to have those good paying jobs growing up! Now the tanneries are gone, and mostly the Health Care fields are in exchange, with retail, customer service, and some manufacturing are left. Printing was also huge here. It’s still exists under the digital level, but not really enough as it once was.

Milwaukee has some strong programs here that many recognize like the Running Rebels, True Skool, and mostly now known is getting recognition: We Got This. Also part of the strong programs, does have a direct connection with local churches, community counterparts, some well known companies, and neighborhood block watch organizations.

But all in all, like any other city, Milwaukee is not alone with problems. And with the issue of this recent shooting of Syville Smith is not a stranger of gun violence period.
