Happy 4th yet again, y’all.

We already know that the country has turned another age in all, but we already know that the ongoing struggle in America indeed continues. And yes if you’re Black, you probably had been called out being a sellout all because you wore the Red/White/Blue instead of the Red/Black/Green. Or you might have sang the National Anthem without any concern except the fact the third verse had a racial thing attached. But as we put away the fireworks and flags in all, I’m scratching my head again.

Ok, did anyone actually read the Declaration? I mean really? What was summarized?

Black folks, we already know about the slavery side of 1776, but what about those whom served in both armies of the Continential, and the British that guaranteed freedom? Yes blacks did served under the flags back then.

Here is a question: I was reading Sophia A. Nelson’s book, “E Plurbis One”, and two of our founding fathers, Benjamin Franklin and John Adams were against slavery. And slightly before the founding year, the idea was shot down. Did you know this?

With all the 4th of July parades and parties in America, why not enough black folks? (At least the parade side)

Frederick Douglass’ speech from 1852 “What to the slave mean to the Fourth of July?” is like a call out to the “hypocritical attitude” of being free for most, not many. Any questions on that?

Best movies to watch on the fourth happens to be ranked of all time? Must include Independence Day and The Patriot.

I hear black folks saying, “that flag wasn’t meant for us!” Well, what flag is?

Why do certain folks like to scream out “Fourth of You Lie?!” And also to add, “what are you celebrating?” Like really?

How come we didn’t point out the verse “No heirling for a slave” before like last couple of years in the National Anthem?
NATIONAL ANTHEMS RENDITIONS:

Was Whitney Houston’s version of the Star Spangled Banner from 1991 the best ever?

Was Marvin Gaye’s Star Spangled Banner from 1983 good? Like 35 years ago?

What about Jimi Hendrix’s version of the Anthem?
AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL RENDITIONS:

Which “America The Beautiful” was and is the best to hear? – Aretha Franklin, John Legend or Chloe/Halle ? (Reference Wrestlemania)
USA DREAM TEAMS

Which Team USA Basketball team was better: 1992 or 2008? ’92 all the way!

Which team is America’s team deserving? I STILL say the Green Bay Packers!

And which “USA Dream Team” is in the making right now in sports that NOBODY is talking about but will have to examine? I might say the US Rugby Team. Who knows?

When will the real American businesses recognize “Made in America” like really?

Chris Rock once said, “Happy White People’s Independence Day”. Last year, Damon Wayans Jr said “Happy racist white people’s day”. Both got slandered and attacked after telling the truth. Well white folks and everyone else, had their punchlines “told the truth?”

Heard that the new San Antonio Spurs player, Lonnie Walker IV had to delete his tweet after he posted about not celebrating the 4th and telling everyone to stay woke. Umm………why was the tweet deleted after not standing his proof enough?

Is “every way” the American way?

How many Americans did not know what Juneteenth Day was about?

How many Americans did not know that Juneteenth Day came approximately 89 years total after 1776?

Speaking of that: Black folks, an idea here: we should wear the numbers 89 or 87 on July 4th (in either red white and blue; or red black and green) to symbolize the amount of years it took black folks to get the freedom we all talk about. Can that be done? And yes we can rock it for Juneteenth Day.

It’s 2018: you know you can be revolutionary by voting in the Midterms, right?

How many Americans did not know that the 4th of July is not always about fireworks?

How many Black T-Shirt makers can create a #MelaninPatriot shirt? or a “The Struggle Continues” in the Stars and Stripes and sell it?

Speaking of Juneteenth yet again, you know the official colors of the Juneteenth Day Flag is Red, White and Blue, right?

We know that Philly throws 4th of July Celebrations alot due to the birth of the nation. But can Milwaukee have a 4th of July party concerts with the locals musicians?

Speaking of Patriotic: which figures in American History seemed to be the most patriotic in terms of speaking out against racism, police brutality, white supremacy, and many other shameful acts?

Which zodiac sign is more like a patriot? I say……..my sign, Sagittarius.

Who is the more of the local patriots that knows the game in the local communities of the struggle, and I dare say the culture?

Milwaukee needs a 4th of July style laser light/fireworks/DJ Show. Who can do this?

Besides the Military, is the average community organizer, or everyday union worker or an everyday working person/volunteer that is very UNSUNG is also patriotic or revolutionary?

And now for the final question: Don’t be offended by the picture below.

Relax and breathe.

Black folks: we know already that many of us don’t really celebrate the 4th Of July by an example of the memes below. And yes, our ancestors were in shackles, branded, whipped, had no freedom, no liberty, no justice, no peace to be us. We were stripped from our former names to get the names like Toby out of Roots. We were forced to be bought and paid in auctions, but like Cicely Tyson said in one of Tyler Perry’s movie “Madea’s Family Reunion” in the line to the family: Now it’s time to take your place!” We also have this tendency to tell folks not to celebrate the 4th all because our ancestors were slaves. We weren’t beaten. But the legality of those beatings linger into police brutality, racism, sexism, discrimination among minorities, and others. We get sensitive when we see our brothers and sisters wearing red white and blue and shake our heads. Why?!!!!

If a black man or a black woman wants to celebrate the 4th in a way different, LET THEM CELEBRATE! Last year, I was listening to one of my local black radio hosts on WNOV 860. There was a black female caller who expressed about the celebrations of Juneteenth Day. However she also expressed about celebrating the Fourth of July. As we all know from her comment that this country was built on the backs of us Black folks either as slaves and freed people. We definitely know this and should know. And the thing is we always hear about us going back to Africa. Well many people forget, not too many in Africa like us African-Americans maybe because many of us haven’t been there! Many forget that part of the slavetrade, came out of Africa (partially sold by other blacks) which was a forgotten comment! And of course, America ate up the idea of slavery and served it up until 1865, when the slaves were declared free. According to Vibe.com, Roland Martin was on the Wendy Williams Show the year before (after she talked smack about the HBCU’S), cited that black people were “technically free”:

If you had to place a marker on when black folks were technically fully free Americans, it’s 1970.

So as I look at this meme with the word Independence spelled wrong, (don’t blame the Public Schools) a Tupac pic, and all the talk about Juneteenth Day being celebrated and something forgotten, and with the ongoing crimes, racism, sexism, discrimination, police brutality, war against blacks lives, undocumented murders against black folks and many other concerns, I must ASK this:

Have we fully gained our Independence so far? And after celebrating Juneteenth, did we fully gained OUR freedom as of right now? Let that sink in.

Callout: Freedom is still not free. Even after 242 years and even after 153 years. Let’s be real, the struggle to get to that freedom thing is going to take a ongoing four letter word of WORK!

And by the way, I need to say this: If a black man or woman or a black kid wants to celebrate BOTH the Fourth and Juneteenth, even if they fly the flags, or decorate the house, man let them. Just let them! Stop the calling out the coon or sellout names. That can somewhat die now. Some folks celebrate their birthdays on those days. Or a anniversary. Or whatever. Malia Obama’s birthday is July 4th….Hello! Let’s be clear, for those of us whom are so “conscious and woke”, look: your opinions are just that. Your own! Let the folks whom are so “Melanin Patriot Powered” have their day. Leave them alone! Let them reclaim their time. No one is not forcing you to celebrate the holiday, where as you should not force anyone to say: “Remember and celebrate Juneteenth Day!” Trust me you will not win that argument at all. I’m just saying, you say that forcefully and folks will still sleep. I mean correct me if I’m wrong, isn’t one of the Bill of Rights has the words, “Freedom of Expression” in it? Hey, let that sink in! And this applies to us like everyday.

Can I get a “Hotep” peace mixed in with a thanks of God Bless America?

Thank You.

Oh you know I was about to comment this.

And yes, It’s Women’s History Month. That I really know. Salute to the female species..

Yes, this is the next issue of Ebony Magazine and it’s not the stories of the featured issue upcoming. But the cover story is featured with the four women all BBW and having a “golden chance” to display their craft. Yes, there have positives, and yes many have voted for displeasure of them, and yes, the health concerns of diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol, and many other health related factors that are very common in men and women. Especially if you’re Black!

Now why I’m putting this on here? It’s it to influence the next girl to go big? No. Technically, it’s really about confidence. Confidence in you as being you. Yeah, I know that I don’t have to like it. But let me ask this? Why are many looking at this pic and hating? They know who they are. Just look at those darn posts of Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and others that lit a fuse of hate. If those fear heavyset BBW whom might be offended, then you shouldn’t look! What is so hard about it? Oh is the movement thing on the BLACK Magazine. Duh!!!!

Frankly, this is not new. Folks been making fun of Plus sizers for years. And in between its like ribbing, making jokes that hurts, talks about their mamma’s being fat and so on. Don’t tell me this! OK so they got it going on now. Being able to step out and actually doing something about it without any fear. The ribbers, well they are sitting at house, blasting their liberties and not making a dime!

Look, another thing, is freedom of expression. Whoops, did I say that? Is that in the American By-laws. If those of a Jasmine Sullivan, Gabi Gregg(aka GabiFresh), or any other person whom wants to do this thing, in this era to be free of fat shaming, or wanting to be free of anti-shaming anything, then I’m not going to stop them or anyone. Look, also. Nobody stopped Ashley Graham. Just saying.

Oh, and to those whom asked about, where are the whites, asians, or non-black female displayed, you do realize that Ebony Magazine is a Black Publication? HELLO! I said it’s a BLACK Publiciation? Many are not hearing this. Especially if you had to sound out on Facebook like a fool on Saturday night. Yes the magazine has had other folks of the non-black universe in it. But with this issue and the women whom are chosen to be displayed on paper, then guess what, it’s an issue and a movement that needs to be talked about. So, in translation: we know you care. But….. It’s not ALL ABOUT YOU! Get it straight!

Maybe the women in the magazine are Big, or Fat, or whatever. Are they taking care of their physique? Are they watching their weight? How often do they get checked by their doctors? Some might say, when do you see your doctors?! Or Dietians that rate your eats and drinks you consume everyday? Or there are those who “look out for their own people” but really do they really mean that? I know folks who say that at times might be true, but there are those just to make noise and don’t care.

So guess what, this blog, nor this issue is not to hate on the BBW’s. Also, I’ve read about skinny folks and husky folks could have genetic health concerns! So everybody got a health problem! And maybe with health solutions! What’s the haps?

Sidenote: There is beauty within.

Now what I’m about to post is a video from a man in New Jersey that is in the Funeral Business. You may have seen this on Facebook, or on Youtube. But however, the message this man brings is a warning to those who are alot younger and still believe that the current game of music and fantasy can be the backbone. Along with the violence that is going on. But trust me, I view this video, and this brother, Tyrone Muhammad (aka Muhammad the Mortician) was not playing around.

Check it. And you’re a grown up with a child that is doing bad, you may need to show this to him or her.

Be warned: it’s graphic. But he also cares for the future.

I’ll be the first to admit, Dick Clark was a great one. He passed today at 82, and no matter which generation you belong to, you had some Dick Clark Stories to share. Either in person, or sharing youtube clips on your Facebook page. Now there are some youngin’s who are probably are going to ask, and I can see and hear the internet blowing up, it’s the same question that was asked on Whitney Houston when she passed. “Who was Dick Clark?” You all better get on board. Now not to discourage anyone who might be in this group, but he was a pioneer in television. He was known as “America’s oldest teenager” in terms of liking rock and roll and never growing up. He also produced shows of $25,000 Pyramid, one of the blooper shows that came out, but mostly: American Bandstand. He also went head to head with Don Cornelius when Soul Train was peaking at a rapid pace. It was kind of like the Monday Night Wars between Raw and Nitro. Just to think that Don Cornelius passed away first at 75 in February.  Like Soul Train, American Bandstand got black artists on the map, and even though it was appealed to white audiences. American Bandstand was originally started to integrate with black/white later after 1952 when the former host Bob Horn was removed from his position as host.

Also as we all know that Dick Clark was known for New Year’s Rockin’ Eve. He commanded that show like he was the Ambassador of the ship. Not just with music, but also getting the countdown feel to midnight of watching the ball drop in Times Square. He made every year good with the show, except for 2004 when he was sidelined with a stroke. And plus his appearance was also missed when the ball dropped in 2000, when we were all trying understand the “Y2K bug” in all.

Now for those who are youngins: You young buck bloggers need to know something. I know you guys are on the American Idol stuff, the Voice, the X-Factor, and also Ryan Seacrest. Just to remember that without Dick Clark, there wouldn’t be a Ryan Seacrest. He commented that Dick Clark was a dear friend of his on Twitter, and he meant that with respect. Even Fab 5 Freddy acknowledged Dick Clark about holding a microphone on Twitter as well. Respect that, young players! And speaking of Ryan Seacrest, he might be the next man in line to command the ship of New Year’s Rockin’ Eve. Yes he had to work with him and most likely that the “mic” or baton will be passed to him. This is called passing of the torch sort of speak. I will agree that when December 31st, 2012 going into January 1st, 2013 happens in New York’s Times Square, it will be completely different.

Dick Clark had ran his race for 82 years. And there’s nothing I can’t say about the fact he helped changed not only music, but also television. Without Dick Clark’s American Bandstand, I think Soul Train, TRL, and many other shows wouldn’t be around. Neither the shows like 106 and Park and So You Think You Can Dance, and others wouldn’t happen. Just my opinion.

Marshall Band’s Last Stand????
I thought that this title would not come today. Marshall High School is losing one of the best groups that the school had since it’s birth year of 1961, the Marshall Band is making it’s final run in the semester. It’s very unfortunate for me as an alumnus to sit here and swallow the bad news about a program that I once endured for my four years, getting to a point of extinction. This is like a freakin’ nightmare. It’s more than a bad dream in October! The reason the band program is departing or in this case “retiring” because the school doesn’t have enough funds, and the school is going to be split in three different high schools in one building, similar to North Division has done this year. Since the news broke, I couldn’t help myself to reflect my best memories in an eagles uniform:
  • I first came to John Marshall in 1991 at age 14. My first (and last) activity was with the Marshall Band.
  • Mr. Mark Grauer was there until his departure in 1993
  • Amy Hufnal was there in September 1994, and is continuing the program until this day.
  • In 1992, the Marshall Band won the Grand Marshals Award for the (now defunct) City of Festivals Parade.
  • During my 4 years, Marshall was invited to participate in Band Day at Northwestern University.
  • I had the opportunity to represent the Red/Blue with the WSMA, Milwaukee Police Band and High School Honors Band
  • My field trips to with the band also included Captiol Court, Holland Tulip Festival, A SC Johnson Wax exposition that featured Marshall Alum, Mike Gousha.
  • My final band appearance was on June 8th, 1995 – the night of my High School Graduation at age 18.
  • In my sophomore year, 1992/1993 I was apart of the first ever Jazz Band that featured events of Rainbow Summer and a Black History Program that I got some respect!
  • Marshall Band has marched in other activities such as the Menomonee Falls Xmas Parade, Veteran’s Day Parade,  Very Special Arts, 2 Halloween Parades, and the All City Honors Band.

For almost 50 years, the Marshall Band has been a pillar of community service in the City of Milwaukee. I feel even more sorry for those who would never had a chance to experience more out the music program. Simply put, for me the Band was a special opportunity to stay of trouble, and make a difference in the community. That difference is reflected on me each day when I drive past the school, or look a the yearbooks, or the website or just talking about it. In speaking of spirit, I can remember one story that has to do with my first year at Marshall that dealt with school safety. In, 1991 the school was facing problems of violence that had the students and parents (mainly my own) concerned. There was a town meeting about the incidents which led the principal fired, and changing of standards of safety. In the thursday leading to homecoming day, one of the administrators, Mr. Tolfer came into the band room. We were rehearsing, and I remember him stating that the band was the last hope of bring joy back to the student body. The day of the game, it brought smiles to people that the band was attempting to resurrect the school. That right there, is a spirit story. I hope and pray that Marshall would one day to bring up “a new band” to help generate a purpose in the school, but mostly to give the students an opportunity to shine in spirit.
