So here we are yet again.

Happy New Year!

Welcome to the blog story that is traditional. Let’s review of what I said last year with a twist:

Like Sgt. Hulka used to say in the movie Stripes: “before we proceed any further, we gotta get something straight.”

I’m going to be taking this blog to new heights. It’s not just going to be the same old song and dance. Nope, that is going to be one and done. It’s going to more than just one blog story. No matter if you are in America or in freaking India, be ready. This blog thing will one day, get real. If I got to get my Periscope, or own video thing on here to help my stories, well: that’s what I have to do one day. What does all this mean? It means that I have to get better with the idea of blogging with the issues and concerns. I have to. It’s not just that thing that needs to be done, it must be done to improve. To inspire and yes, to get to the point of view that I need to display.

Yes, folks will walk tall, shoulders back, chin up, conscious up to the 10th level, and of course, this is an idea that would be beneficial. I thought about destroying this blog and ending a 10+ year streak, all because of other concerns of boredom or that same story. But wait…..this could be a benefit to help and inspire. While many might think that one story from a blog is all there is, think again!

“Stephen’s Spot” is not just about one blog story. Or one picture. Or one anything. It can be revolutionary, inspirational, conscious, fun, life experienced, or just plain normal. It’s not a one dance show. It’s one in the million that can be experienced if many take the time to read more than one. Now, I know many are just now discovering the blog based on what I have written back in 2014 or whatever. But if you (yes you) the reader actually like what I write here, in a sense of right now, thank you.

Knowingly I can’t control what others might read, but by me writing more, and thinking more, it will be fully objectionable for me to carry on. I’m in the 40-year-old plus age bracket, and yes this age bracket will indeed test my theory and summarize.

So guess what: you want Stephen’s Spot? I’ll give you Stephen’s Spot! This is no same old song and dance. Nope, not here!

So for now: let’s start my New Year’s Tradition of Stephen’s Spot that doesn’t need a repeat: What do I want to see and not want to see in 2019! 19 things by the way.

It’s GO TIME!

First Five I want to see in THAT YEAR OF 2019:

Employment/Health & Wellness/Politics/Voting

1) It’s time to work, folks. If this is the year that you will get that real job, the time is now! No more wasting time by waiting on others. It won’t work. We need to have a “Career Awareness Month”. We need to have better job fairs, career expos, have a “seasonal vet” career fair for the mature folks. Not that watered down stuff that many are getting. Even if you still have that degree in the display, that many will pass up. We have to do EXTRA better.

2) If you got to get yourself checked, do it. You know where the doctors are. As well as the dentists, eye examination folks and more. Matter of fact some of them might be near you right now. And while we’re at it, we need to for real get educated about the issues of health. I hear say, “you need to do this or that”. or “you need a flu shot.” BEFORE ANY THAT HAPPENS: ASK QUESTIONS! Forget what you saw on Facebook, know that real stuff first! Really stop and ask definite questions!

3) 2019 also means that the Congress will take over with some new #45 laws being placed unfairly. If any of the new members screw up, get on their case! Don’t just complain on social media, complain to the So-and-sos! Write letters or emails with proper sentences! You can do that, you know. Oh, and if you approve of the work that some or many are doing to help this country and mainly in your districts, show some love! Volunteer or work on their staff, help in politics on their behalf. Be an Able Body Person to carry that out!

4) You should know that 2019 is a “mini” voting year? Oh, you didn’t know this? Pay attention! It’s not the Presidential election, but maybe some of your County Judges or Superintendents will up be running on the ballot. Do better!

5) Speaking of the voting thing, this would be a good time to get your voter registration checked and/or updated to get ready for the 2019-20 election years. I want to see this happen even more. Forget waiting until 2020! It’s best to do it NOW!

Next Five I don’t want to see:
Church/African-Americans/Credit Checks/Not Voting

6) Like last year, and the year before that and previous years: I don’t want to see NO ONE complaining about the lack of this or that in the church. If you don’t have a certain something going in your church, then make something happen! Keep at it! What did I say after my father’s passing in 2017: Be empowered, and Stay in the fight!

7) And like many many years ago: I don’t want to see black folks putting other black folks down for stupid pathetic reasons! No matter what happens we must continue to look in the mirror and raise up. Either for Jobs, Education (past or present) contributions, clubs/organizations etc. And that goes for anyone else. It doesn’t matter what you got with you. Either way, NO EXCUSES!

8) Never EVER OVERLOOK THIS: Black Queens: you say you LOVE us Black Kings right? DO YOU?! Here is a “whenever you get a chance” challenge that you might not think. Cater to us for ONE DAY at a restaurant, or maybe give us a day that we might enjoy. Think it over! Many of you got Brothers, Fathers, Uncles, Husbands, Boyfriends, Cousins, Neighbors, and many other male influences that you probably know that need that appreciation! Even Black Kings whom you overlook a lot, never thought about, or being Single and no relationships. You guys go all out for your thing and we’re in the seats. Why not us?

9) I HOPE TO GOD, I don’t want to see credit checks on black folks no more. Matter of fact, not on anyone anywhere with credit checks!

10) I don’t want to see those who didn’t vote to gloat. Guess what: Elections have Consequences. Period!

Five More things I want to see:

Alumni Associations/Results Doing Actual Work and Milestones/ Black Church Groups/Black Community/Fraternities and Sororities

11) I want to see more of us ALUMNI (YOUNG AND OLD) to reinvest in our Alumni Groups. Not just for the class reunions and everyone also shows up broke, mad, left out and uninformed. If you get pissed about not being informed about a class reunion or gathering, DO NOT GET MAD AT THE ALUMNI COMMITTEE! You need to be backing up your Alumni Contacts from your classmates, anyway. And if your Alumni Organizations messes up, get on their case!

12) I want to see the results of us “doing the work”. Not just the partial results of patting on the back and say “nice work”. But also what did it took to get the results needed. And if your employee is celebrating a milestone of service (10, 20, etc), give him or her the due of respect. It’s the right thing to do. Or even if no one gives you a pin of service: give yourself one!

13) I want us “non-scared and scared grown folks in the Black Church Groups” to talk to our youth. Seriously talk to them. Some of them need us to come to them. I don’t care if they are in the schools shooting basketballs or at the community centers or in church playing Chess or Madden. Or double dutching, or even learning a praise dance. Even tutoring and READING BOOKS! Let’s learn to #HashtagAndTalk to our young folks. Male members of the church: get the young men involved in these groups! Women, you know what it is.

14) I want to see more black folks in the communities who think there is nothing there to do, start something! Stop complaining! Stop moaning! Get up and get out and make the stuff happen! Such as Health stuff, job applications, resumes, networking, organizing a business venture. Able Body folks, if you’re still standing outside of a Walgreens or a Gas Station asking for money, and if you can still move around, get inside that building and ask for an application! Why is that so hard?

15) Like last year and year ago, here is a thought: I want to see ALL fraternities, and ALL sororities to “recruit and meet up” with seasoned vets that can help out. Especially those of the black fraternities and sororities. All of the Divine 9 folks: From the Alphas to the Iotas and from the AKA’s to the Sigma Gamma Rho’s: Have a day in which YOU need to go out to the seasoned vets of those who are 40-ish and up that want to join up to support the groups you represent. And also, don’t be so VERY judgmental about those who are at that 40’s range. The best place to find us: either at our church events, alumni group meetings, etc. And this goes for the American Legion Family, Masons, Elks, Eastern Stars, and etc. WE SEE YOU! You need to re-introduce yourselves!

Final four: I want not to see and want to see.
Black Lives Matter/Volunteerism/Grown After 18/If it doesn’t work…..

16) Of all the things I don’t want to see: enough of the blame game on Black Lives Matter that seemed violent or racist. For all you Blue Lives Matter or copying off the Black Lives Matter Movement, you will suck. Instead of hating on Black Lives Matter at least go to a meeting or hear from those who lost a brother, or sister or a parent that was black. Take notes, Blue Lives Matter. And don’t front!
MASSIVE NEW YEAR’S CALLOUT: And also white folks: enough calling the cops on black folks doing CIVILIZED stuff like campaigns, jobs, barbecues, community projects, volunteering or even waiting on a client, going into their apartment, swimming, selling lemonade, or to be SEATED AT A RESTAURANT OR AT STARBUCKS! Be advised and WARNED; if you work at a job, you will be fired for these stupid acts! And it takes a SMARTPHONE with video to get you TERMINATED!

17) Now, this probably might work in this 2019: Get grown in your own work and volunteerism. We know what we need to do, and what to do this year. So why not get involved? And the time is right now! Didn’t I say it’s time to work?

18) This is for the grown folks 18 and up: HANDLE your grown business! After all, we supposed to be grown after 18, right?

19) If any of the plans that don’t work, This should be seen and heard by EVERYONE: If there are things that might be difficult, stressful, unhealthy, not financially, and many others, Leave it alone! Find a Plan B, or what you know best and stick to that! Keywords: PLAN B!

Happy New Year!!

Before us Americans get the cooking stuff out, it’s time think. Get your thinking caps on. With all the media mess going on from the flag to racism, we know food is source of healing. So is the mind preparing the food. But as always, I’m scratching my head again.

You realize that “Movember” really started with voting right? Way before the health awareness male mustache thing. Research!

Why is #45 wasting his time with LaVar Ball?!

Trump supporters: some of you realize that LeVar Burton is not LaVar Ball. How dumb is that?

Milwaukee, stop playing with the Streetcar questions. You know it’s giving folks jobs right? Quit playing!

I want to know: WHY are callers calling Churches for money?!!

Why are the Packers not playing good football right now you ask? – 5 words here – Anthony Barr injured Aaron Rodgers. Say it again and again.

What about those Wisconsin Badgers Football players?

So, Atlanta tore down the Georgia Dome. But why many are upset?

In a recent report, the Greater Milwaukee Area is not good when it comes to African-Americans. Do we know this like, already?

According to Forbes, it once stated that many HR’s look at resumes that get tossed after looking almost scary. What is the real reason why many aren’t getting the jobs?! Race, Credit Checks, Education?

So the Facebook group, “The Whole Milwaukee #1” is now getting noticed. So my questions are, why are those using it for swapping drugs, beat downs and not enough for networking with our people?

Speaking of networking, does the Milwaukee MPS Alumni actually know about it’s networking events and actually go besides the Alumni Reunions?

Is Mahlon Mitchell ready for real to run for Governor in Wisconsin? And you realize that Wisconsin never had a black Governor since it’s founding?

Did the black Veterans received much love on Veterans Day? Minority Vets don’t get that much love though.

International Men’s Day came and went on November 19th. Why is this day not honored enough in the United States? Close your mouths, feminists! It’s not about you.

Hey Sagittarius folks, our season is here. Ready to sling the Arrows?

So GOP, is Trump really that guy? Seriously?!

Again, why are we body shaming?! This ain’t High School.

For all you fans of #45, does the term embarrassing comes to mind?

Why is it always that there are more married couples retreats and not enough singles only retreats that don’t see marriage?

Who is responsible for these young girls and young boys acting a fool based on stolen cars, etc?

The recent victory for the Democrats in Virginia and some parts of America really sparked new heights. Is this the breakthrough for the midterms regarding the blue team in 2018?

For you crazy drivers in Milwaukee, why are you still cutting in-front of vehicles and causing accidents?

On December 5th, are you Georgia residents are actually going to vote?

Who really hates the Hallmark Christmas Movies? Asking for a friend!

For the Wisconsin jobs that have the 60,000 jobs unfilled, what are real skills and experience to have besides just having a High School Diploma?

Who is really shopping on Black Friday to get that ideal T.V.? That ain’t happening!

Why do many non-Native Americans had to jump on the bandwagon of not doing the Thanksgiving thing? You know which ones!

I need to know who is putting out this crap about Churches “supposed to have money” for those whom don’t know? Do they know protocol?

Every church men’s group should know about the safe sanctuary rules from sexual harassment to violent outcomes. Does your Church men’s group do this?

For those of us who have to spend Thanksgiving without a special loved one for the first time this year, how will we get through this? And the same for Christmas, etc? It’s hard for us. Even my family.

Why is David Clarke still running his mouth?

Are the black protest groups really that troublesome being on the FBI watch?

Why would those who go after Rep. Maxine Waters with death threats?

Is Donna Brazille being targeted unfairly after her book was published? Or just happenstance?

Why are the “so-called patriots” coming for Congresswoman Frederica Wilson?

Will the real truth about the late Sgt. La David Johnson please stand up? Don’t act like we don’t know.

I see alot of military hats and division hats, why not have hats for descendants of Veterans or Veteran Families? (sons, daughters, etc.)

What is the percentage of African-Americans in the American Legion Family? Not asking for a friend!

Is the cord cutting thing still going on well? Asking for a friend!

Should the month of November be also the month to spur the support of Veterans everyday?

Why is it always that Black Men, (good ones mind you) get all mistakenly for something that they didn’t do for years and years? Black women, you must explain your part also. As well as everyone else. From molesting, to harassment, to abuse.

For all those whom are so-conscious and running your mouth on social media: what is your motive for ACTUALLY DOING SOMETHING?! Don’t talk about it, be about it!

Will Aaron Rodgers be stronger than ever? Just wait, Packer fans. Revenge is coming.

Why is it always a problem for men to talk about Sexual Harassment? Even if you have men in your life that went through it since childhood? This is not a joke!

Is Brett Hundley learning well? What about Joe Callahan?

Tired of reading the same ol’ stuff? Why not read something different? Hello!

If many complain about other people’s blogs, journalism, radio, TV, Online Podcastings, and others, why not start their own stuff to inform of what they want to talk about?

One of these days, I want to learn Skeet Shooting and Archery. Who is a great teacher? Where? Must be in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Lot of folks might do the Black Friday thing. If you pack Walmart or Best Buy, why not the local small stores?

I gotta ask why did those in Wisconsin think that it’s a good idea to have a gun laws signed for toddlers or those under 10 to have guns in their hands for hunting? No!

Is Foxconn the real way for jobs in Wisconsin regarding black folks who CAN’T get to the jobs? Still asking that for a friend.

Twitter: I like you. Why is your app causing problems of logging in?!

And the final question before you start cooking: has the Black Friday feeling sunk in yet, or are you staying put?

Now you may resume continue cooking your Thanksgiving Meal.

For quite sometime, I had to sit and reflect on certain things about those who attend church and those who don’t. Especially those who grew up in church and now have a conscious decision to condemn it to be a freethinker. Yes I’m talking about them as much as those in church who might not do the Christian thing of giving and feeding. That being said, I’m going to bust out a exclusive of my own experience that if you are a church attendee in all that acts a fool at times, and a non/former church attendee that talks smack of deliverance. Guess what? It’s time that I put the gauntlet on the line where it lies: in the darn middle!

And to add: I’m going hard on this.

Now you may have seen various comments and things on Facebook or Instagram, the memes, or any other blog, or radio broadcast about those who think that the church is full of the hypocrites that go in all of the Sermon, and then afterwards they go to the Red Lobster for their sunday grub and go home. Then they don’t do the things they say they going to discuss about during the week. Does that sound familiar? Does it? Oh, and they pour in the money so the pastor can have that big mansion like house in the hills with the Jaguar in the front! Hmmmmmm……..Reallly? Yes I know i’m not the only one that had to comment this. But however, not all pastors don’t have big mansion like houses or Jags that the members pour in for Apportionments! And where is this coming from? Ask those who formerly went to church and really have that conscious Free-Thinking mindset. Or ask those who are not a member of a church who happens to go online to social media and literally BLAST the churches or the mindset of a church because it’s on the northside, or whatever. And that can come from a “Activist” that goes from protest to another!

Are they speaking the truth on this? Partially, they are half-right. Not totally right.

Now let me asking these questions.

  • Are these folks who condemn the churches straight to hell on Social Media think they have all the answers?
  • Do they have the answers to believe that being a free thinker is all what it matters?
  • Do they honestly beehove all the actions that they went though thinking that it wouldn’t be a future threat?
  • Do they TOTALLY HONESTLY AGREE that all churches should be on the duty in and outside the table in the community?
  • Do they honestly believe that they are hurting those who are giving their DEAD LEVEL BEST everytime they go into the church for service? And then later on to do more to volunteer and give back?
  • Do they STRONGLY FEEL that those go to church are coming out with a hypocritical agenda against those who don’t? Educated, Financially Stable, Attendance, Time and Talents, or any other option or goal that the goers strive EVERY TIME they learn from?
  • Do they actually care?
  • Why do they care?
  • And the personal favorite, in regarding the love of God, where is the fear? That’s right I said it!

I want the non-church goers and former church goers to answer these questions themselves. Go ahead share it. Don’t answer them to me! Don’t comment to me! And frankly those who do go, just sit back and be silent for a bit.

Now for you Church Attendees. Regardless if you are Christian, Jew, Lutheran, Muslim, Catholic, or any other religious connection. Let me ask these questions:

  • Are we really doing the things that we set out to do?
  • Are we Ashamed of the summaries of Christ? Or Allah?
  • Do we really go out to eat AFTER we hear the Sermon?
  • Do we do the work that our denomination or non denominations set out for us to do?
  • Do we actually set out and tell the good news?
  • Do we summarize our lessons learned throughout the week?
  • Have we really watched our attitudes and avoid being “hypocrites” with our actions and what we say?
  • Before the service starts, do we greet and or smile?
  • When the Pastor says “go out into the world and spread the good news”, do we?
  • When we have our days of giving food or clothing, are we following OUR rules? Making sure WE don’t get in trouble?
  • Is it well in our souls in trying to serve? (A nod to the United Methodist Faithful)
  • In discussions of being Godly, are we conscious at the same time? (I.E. Black Conscious, Socially Conscious)

This is why I’m busting this out. For all those who know it all either in or out of church, I got news for you: There is always something else!  It does not matter what church or denomination you belong too. And this goes for those who went let’s say:went  catholic or COGIC for about 5 years and assumed that they know everything and leave the church because of the worst things like: “Oh the bible is full of BS!”  Have you ACTUALLY read the bible? Have you have ACTUALLY READ the scriptures in your parents house or library or your grandparents house? Have you actually had your grandmother or grandfather, whether they living or deceased asked YOU (I’m talking to the know it alls per say) what did it meant? See, we don’t know SQUAT!  Man……some of us are just like immature kids. We don’t know squat, period! It’s all about tip toeing around the pond and not actually going into the pond!  And having conspiracy theories that many don’t understand. And on a side note, I will say that affects Church goers also.

My late Grandfather. One of my late Grandfather asked one of my family members about the bible when he was living, and he responded, “what do you know about it?” This is coming from him who was an Eremitus of his Church Sunday School for many years. That’s right, look up the word Eremitus to see what it is and you’ll know why it’s missing.

I have indicated before that I’m a 4th Generation United Methodist Church member. I was confirmed in the church in 1990 at the age of 13. That’s 25 years for so many of you keeping count. And yes, like a few others, I had and have ministers in my family that expand 2 or 3 generations. From my Great-Grandmother’s generation to Generation X. And yes, I had and experienced the good in folks, bad in folks and those who was just there for a short stint and moved on to greener pastures. And there are those who’ve been in the game through generations are sticking around want to make something happen. I’m sure many of you reading this who do dedicate services to your churches of any kind, that when you hear about all the negativity, you keep going with your craft to discipleship. No matter what anyone tells you. Even if they are church goers or not! Also be careful of the work that it arises.

And for those who are the former church goers and non-church goers who keeps talking about the hypocrites, what the pastor, bishops and apostles are doing in the sanctuaries along with the members: CUT SOME OF THE MEMBERS YOU KNOW SOME SLACK!!!!!! There are members in churches that are trying their dead level best to rise up and do something for their organizations. All of you really need to get your heads examined. Stop being so judgemental. And don’t generalize THE WHOLE DANG CHURCH! That is one of the main concerns of this whole conversation. Folks seem to generalize the whole group all the time. Just like when a black dude or a black woman per say sees their son or daughter making crimes and it blows up on TV or Facebook, guess what is going to happen:

Other communities will be like, “Oh, the Black Community this. Oh, the Black Community that……….”  And don’t even scream out #BlackLivesMatter!

The Black Community knows very well about being generalized as a whole, when it involves just a few knuckleheads. Where as when you have some church members or some church community members applying for a jet, or a new car: the whole village or city will be on their throats. Tell me I’m not lying.

There was a song that came out way before Generation X blew up, but our Baby Boomer counterparts know it: “Everybody Plays A Fool.” It’s not just church folks. It’s not just non-church folks. It’s EVERYBODY!  Whether you attend church or not, we need to watch it. We need to be accountable of what we do, say, think, or have opinionated viewpoints. Yes, that includes me.

Just recently, I was listening to one of my Black Milwaukee Radio Stations. Actually, it’s WNOV. It’s the only black radio station in Milwaukee. And a interesting question came up about Christians after church. The caller, assumed is Christian and a Female, that phoned in during the mid morning hours asked about why Christians don’t always spread the good news. The caller emphasised about going to the church, hearing the Pastor’s Sermons and after all of that is said and done, they go out to dinner and go home for the week. So after hearing that, (which is not new) my question is why was the caller asking the host about the church going procedures? And second, what is SHE DOING? Not judging, but asking. What is she doing to help to spread the good news? What is she doing with examples of her plight of her craft to ensure that good news? Not to comment further but the questions she asked the host, she should be asking herself those questions. No offense to her, her church, her ministry in all. But I would ask myself those questions instead going on the radio publically. Why you ask? It’s been asked over and over again. So why is this new?  And plus not everyone is the same as the female caller! Everyone’s God Given Gifts are different. That I’ll agree with.

  • Do I do the christian thing by helping out others or supporting others to the best of my ability? Yes.
  • Do I act as a hypocrite or charlatan for others? No. I was raised way better than that!
  • Do I give and receive as any other Christian? Yes.
  • Do I love God’s Grace and well as fearing God’s outcome? Yes.
  • Am I perfect as a Christian? NO!
  • Do I strive to be the best I can in and out of church everyday? Yes.
  • Do I force my Christian hand down the throat of those who moan and groan? As in those who don’t want to hear about the God Stuff? No.
  • Do I find ways to improve my church home as well as the community alike? YES I  DO!
  • Have I been in a situation in church where I was a victim of someone’s hypocritical mindset? Yes I have.
  • Have I been criticized by those who are haters in and out of the church? Yes.
  • Do I honor the work of the church with my gifts and talents and share that with those on the regular level? Yes.
  • Do I run around the sanctuary being filled with the Holy Ghost like those MegaChurches or any other church that does this? NO!!!!!
  • Do I tithe or have I tithed or attempted to tithe? Yes. And I know where the money goes.
  • Have I ever heard the words Hell and Eternal Damnation and ran out of the Sanctuary? No. And by the way, if those say “D*mn” in a church sermon, should realize that it came from the bible. It’s not all cursing related!
  • Have I dressed up in Jeans as well as a Suit and Tie? Of course. There is a rule that come as you are.

All of those questions and answers, I have experienced thus far. But like many others there is so much work to be done. AND YET I STILL GO!  Plus the things I described here, even though that my church experience have been shaky, mean, and also normal, I still go.

Do we say these things where our troops go to battle, or our officers on patrol, or any other high ranking official go and perform their duties? Even though we talk smack about them but still give them high  praise? We need to work on that.

I said before that there are hypocrites everywhere. Don’t fool yourselves! It’s not just church! Right now at work, you might have a hypocritical boss or an employee that constantly berates you like hell and you want to strike him or her.  But you still might continue to work or quit the job to go to another. Or start your own business.

You might had run ins with a Police Officer, a Deputy Sheriff, or maybe a well known official that seems nice, but is a hypocrite.

You might have hypocritical Football Fans in bars and at your house. And you root for the same team!

What about the activists or those whom are so conscious (UH-OH) who march around like kings and folks eat it up like clockwork? BUT…….might have hypocritical mindsets?

You even might have family members or group members, or Fraternity/Sorority Members that are like this. And wonder why you stopped talking or chatting or texting. Then they show up at a funeral having this solace to cover up the hypocrite behavior. HELLO!

I had ran into job related folks in Milwaukee whom were hypocrites because of my education I got from UW-Stout by not going on campus. I know the organizations and names very well. As well as those other companies that refused to hire black folks in the Greater Milwaukee Area based on income, experience, training, education and zipcodes. Tell me I’m lying Milwaukee! And I have never forgotten that. Even when I got my degree nearly 10 year ago on Stout’s campus through the commencement.

So I say this: we all need to look in the d*mn mirror. And really go out with a purpose and objective! The “Come to Jesus Meeting” is up and the seats need to be filled.

Folks: Don’t be alarmed.

Usually I don’t write stuff about church that much, really because I belong to a church family. And yes, I’m a 4th Generation UMC Member. But however after listening and reading conversations about why church folks don’t do enough, or those like to make a mockery of the inspirational giving, it’s apparently that yes, being a church goer believing in God the father, the Son and the Holy Spirit fully can be a huge battle. It’s a battle that raged on for centuries, generations, eras, and changing times. It’s even a battle today, even on Social Media. Now, I don’t mean to get picked on, or talked about, it’s really nothing but hate of understanding. Yes, there are those who mock the church things. Those who have to display on their platforms about what the church should be doing than not doing. I get it. There are those who probably went to church earlier in life and got all confused with some snarly wisdom that those who feel that it was hypocritical. I will admit, church folks (no matter what denomination or faith) can be some what hypocritical at times. BUT some can be forgiving and reminders of what the positive can be if given a chance. And by the way, folks outside of church can be hypocritical anywhere. You might have hypocritical co workers or bosses. Or neighbors, friends and family. Some say it’s all fake. It’s not real. Jesus Christ was just a figment of an imagination. Or the story of Christmas with the Christmas tree was copied from a tree wrapped around with a snake. – Um, SO! Where the reference? When folks actually get these “sources” no matter where they are from, usually it’s not the actuate truth. They probably just got it from someone without any true reference. Where’s the bibliography, the sources of footnotes? UM Hello those like to post things like that on Facebook! And Instagram. You say its the truth, well…..where’s the truth? That’s like saying, “hey son: I want to show you this picture of a real Christmas tree. You know how it got started?” “Where did it come from?” the son asked. “Oh, the Internet. This such and such website”. Many folks need to review how things got referenced. I’m just saying.

Now fast forward, and this is an old story. You may have heard this on the radio, or online about “these church folks who go to church on Sundays need to come out and knock on some doors to help the community!” You know as strange as that sounds, it’s agreeable. HOWEVER: I need to address this to the black community, and I don’t care if you are in Milwaukee, here is something that I know: many of you or some of you don’t want church folks around period. Oh, I just ruffled some feathers. Let’s face it. How many of you reading this blog had ever had a church member or a church group tried to help you out in some way, and you turned away a said no – in this case in a mean manner of disrespect? And some of you USED to go to church, or claimed to be a non-going person that was talked among your friends who thought were telling the truth. Think about it. You probably got friends right now thinking this. You probably got family members believing this. Or maybe you got those that you went to school, college, the Military, Fraternity, Sorority, neighbor, boss, co-worker that probably said the exact same thing! And some probably got you on their list on Facebook or Instagram. Or any other social media platform.

Yeah you “hear all this” from your friends in all, or from a radio station that mentioned it, and you tend to believe them. For me, I think I feel sorry for them. Just like when per say, you grew up this and that and have this hatred against a certain denomination. And you remember going to the services and then out to eat and go home. Is that ALL you’ve done?

Here’s my question, I want the current former folks of the church to ask this: When you were going Pentecostal, Methodist (either United Methodist, AME or Pan African Methodist), Baptist, or any other group living and breathing, what activities, or ideas did you bring up while you were there? What were you supposed to look for but didn’t ask further for help? What was some of the things that you wanted but never had accomplished? And also, did any of those things you tried to do changed? I’m not calling you out as bad folks. The bible says judge not. But what I am asking is what have YOU tried to do differently when you were under the membership? Personally I want to know that one. With me, y’all know I’m a 4th Generation UMC Church member right? Said it so many times. My late Great-Grandmother and Grandmother on my mother’s side were charter members. My mother is 3rd Generation. And my church didn’t start in no building. It started in the homes in Black Milwaukee. But during my UMC upbringing, I was in the choir, Sunday School, Conformation class, acted upon as an usher, showcased my gift on the saxophone (still do), and now doing work as a Communications Chairperson in recording sermons, taking pics, got my first job as a summer worker and currently working as Secretary. And keeping with the Facebook users, and Twitter Followers. Overall, I have given 18 years of my church time thus far on Sundays doing these things. In other words, I have worked my way up.

Now many of you are saying, “Oh that’s good. BUT what about outside of the church? Like feedings in all? WHAT ABOUT THE HUNGRY FOLKS? AND THOSE WHO NEED CLOTHES FOR FREE? AND SHELTER? AND PROGRAMS? HMM…….Where are those at? And are they still in tact? I don’t see them here, Godboy.”

In my extended resume, I have helped out in Food givings, prepared clothes for those who needed them to keep warm or the preparation of it. I have participated in watch meetings and block parties. Helped organized special events that are community based in dealing with Domestic Violence Prevention.  – In speaking of that, from a UMC perspective, did you know that BOTH the United Methodist Women and United Methodist Men several years ago held a joint partnership in discussing the dangers of Domestic Violence? And also participated in Scholarship Walks to raise money for college students. In which was the same program that helped me to get assisted funds for my college textbooks and supplies. And my church is a member of the organization that is named after Dr. King that is still doing it. Plus also my church does have blood pressure screenings at least once a month after church for those who want to keep up with their health. Even currently honoring Veterans for their service in uniform.

Any other questions folks?

Oh, let’s not forget the activities that are “church influenced” that I am doing, like helping out my High School Alumni Association Board of Directors. Last year, I was selected as Treasurer for Alumni group in which was another first. I am the first 1990’s African-American Male High School Alumnus from my old high school to be selected and serve at this level. Plus I devoted my time at my old high school to go support the current students in sports and events! I even donated to my old high school. Also, I go to my alumni events of College/University and I have donated to the Alumni Association/College Foundation group in support of the current college students for their future scholarships or a new idea to keep the school programs intact! Even becoming an advocate for higher learning! And just to add more fuel to the fire of the haters – I am a City Election Inspector in registering new voters, reactivating old voters, and working the polls on selected Election Day events. And I’ve been doing this since 2006. Even helped out during the Obama Campaign of 2012.

AND GUESS WHAT? Those items I listed above, where do you think I got this influence from? Guess where? One place: the church.

So I have to say that yes many might joke up, display dirty, or call out many things against the church. You know what, let them hate all they want. Let them get this off their chest (if they have a chest period), let them front with words of warning on Social Media. Let them do all they want. Frankly: I DON’T CARE if they boo me at a Wrestling match. Or cheer for me at a class reunion. I DON’T CARE!!!!! I’m still going to remain the game until the race is over! Oh yeah they might front in all. But what happens when all the fun fronting from them is over? What might happen when all of that is dead and done? What happens when that battle is long gone and the church is still standing up in the end?

Let me say it now to be clear, I am not here to make anyone believe anything that I believe. I am not here to make those who go on my twitter timeline each Sunday and view all the excerpts from the sermons I hear. If those want to follow me on twitter each Sunday: @smcclintonjr. And/or look for the hashtags of #rethinkchurch #umc #Milwaukee #Wisconsin. If those don’t want to, they don’t need my approval. Just scroll on. Why the #rethinkchurch hashtag? This is what the UMC is trying to do. Rethink Church. Rethink the ministry. Rethink the use of the church in a new way to get involved in the folks outside looking in. Rethink the attitudes or mindset of those that haven’t been tried or failed to reach. Rethink the objectives and rethink the conclusion to have a new understanding of this message to the masses. Plus this Rethink Church thing should not be a catchphrase. It should be a way of life for everyone in the church each day to try new ways to minister inspirational life. The old ways aren’t working out.  It’s time to find THE NEW for THE BETTER. And when that happens, hopefully salvation can be renewed or reformed.

As an example for those who want to view my tweets on Sundays: “We are conquerors! We want to be of the world.”
