I want to address Black America for a second. We know that this is the month of celebrating our black heritage and accomplishments. Our own centerpiece. But today, we just got punked.
I’m sure many may not know what I’m talking about, but in this I’m talking about the controversial Nicki Minaj cover that was displayed today: Now before I mention any further, the image may not be for all to see. Be warned of the disclaimer:
Normally you don’t really have to say why this. Normally you really got to ask why during Black History Month do we have to see this mess of disrespect of Malcolm X? What is the decorum of this pic that she disrespects? And the preverbial: “These young cats in the game got it messed up! And now disrespecting Malcolm like this is whack!” Now who’s the blame? Its not the white folks. Not the Hispanic, German or any other ethnic except US BLACK FOLK!
Now the old hip hop heads probably remember this very well.
At all times: The mirror is clearing facing us and when we point at it, the reflection bounces back at us! Technically we fall short of not acknowledging our history because we are doomed to repeat. You talk about “negropeans?” Come on black activists, where you at?!! Guess what, she’s got me talking. The local DJ’s talking. TheGrio, Facebook, Instagram, and many others in the realm talking. EVEN YOU the black activists who constantly say or comment anything that’s Negropean. Just saying. And I’m sure that is what it’s all about. You make a loud bomb, you set in an area where all to hear, it’s detonates, and it makes a loud noise. BOOOOM! That what this is. That’s what the game is. You make a loud noise to get attention. Last time Nicki Minaj made a loud noise, remember that Grammy Awards performance when she performed her song Roman Holiday? Being like the stage was in a church like dungeon and the part on her was almost exorcism-like? Don’t LIE! All you all even the non blacks looking and reading probably had saw the same thing. And that bomb was loud the next day. Plus there were apologies like today. And plus she is under the same YMCMB wing like Lil’ Wayne. Uh-oh! Last time Lil’ Wayne got into trouble like this was making a rap lyric of Emmett Til in the song Karate Chop. The lyric was so bad even the execs had to pull the plug. Oh let’s fast forward to last month before the MLK Holiday of those Freedom 2 Twerk Parties, and the organizer of the party had to disconnect the phone number, Facebook account and many other connections not to be notified. Don’t hide now!
And now, this. Even after Beyonce’s Song Drunk in Love that featured “surfboards.”
Seriously African-Americans. We have to ask the question and I hate to go here on this, but when examples arises on this notion, why do we get stupid? I hate to ask this. Why are we stupid in examples like these? Why? Is it the morals? Our attention? Our crying out for attention? Was it because that our parents weren’t around? Those long church sermons from your pastor? Our old neighbor that was always on us like white on rice? Was it because we paid attention to our friends because of their “true” matters at hand? – My late Grandmother used to say, “You ain’t got no friends!” And on that, when an establishment gets noticed about race against us, why do we have the sudden urge to go back? Just like here in Milwaukee we have Elsa’s on the Park. Remember that? When the owner’s girlfriend had lashed out at the black customers that walked out, plus the cooks who were black had walked out. But after all that, guess what? Months later, the folks had gone back to the restaurant to eat. Man, if I was a “Elsa’s Park Customer” I would be revoking my membership forever, write a letter to the manager, and make a decree that I will never set foot in the place again!” – Congrats, you’ve lost a loyal customer of color!
I did the same thing with Milwaukee’s Manpower, and yes the Milwaukee Urban League when looking for a job in 2004, while maintaining my status as a UW-Stout Distance Education Student. And if you’re reading this from either organization, I never forget, and sometimes don’t forgive!
Did Nicki Minaj apologize about the photo? Yes. As proof here’s her response from her instagram account with other commentary:
What seems to be the issue now? Do you have a problem with me referring to the people Malcolm X was ready to pull his gun out on as Lookin A** N*ggaz? Well, I apologize. That was never the official artwork nor is this an official single. This is a conversation. Not a single. I am in the video shooting at Lookin A** N*ggaz and there happened to be an iconic photo of Malcolm X ready to do the same thing for what he believed in!!!! It is in no way to undermine his efforts and legacy. I apologize to the Malcolm X estate if the meaning of the photo was misconstrued. The word “n*gga” causes so much debate in our community while the “n*gga” behavior gets praised and worship. Let’s not. Apologies again to his family. I have nothing but respect an adoration for u. The photo was removed hours ago. Thank you.
So in her commentary, the part that got me and I will admit that the photo above was not the official final product of the song. Yes, while looking like a you know what, I got punked! We all got punked. I’m not making a bones about it. So now, since the pic got pulled and she did the apology thing based on business, Nicki knew that this would go way beyond proportion and yes she’s facing the wrath. I give the wrath about 2 and half months and my question is, will those in the Nicki Minaj camp and fans will still buy her music and concerts? As the news folks would say, only “time” will tell.
In the meantime, if those of us don’t get learning about our BLACK culture, history, homage, and many other things that we taken for granted, we better learn today!
And that, is my rant.
