Malcolm X once believed that  “Education is our passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today.”  Remember Marty Stein? who owned all the Stein Optical stores in Milwaukee? He too expressed education concerning the dilemmas of our nation. Although he is no longer with us in flesh, but his spirit presented from his excerpt from his last editorial: “The answer is EDUCATION and a conscientious effort to change the environment for our children. We need to value each child as our own –– to motivate, inspire and mentor them to believe that they can be whoever they want to be –– doctors, plumbers, professors, lawyers, pharmacists, etc. –– and we need to do it now. In this effort, time is not our friend.”
So I was reading the JS last week about Worker’s skills not matching jobs. And I heard that educators such as college teachers are to let students know that taking classes in areas of lab tech or printing could get individuals jobs. Well, that can be an understatement. In 2000-2004, I had my first couple full time jobs that were printing related, and worked in the Milwaukee Area.Unfortunately, they were cut short. But getting back to the unmatching, could this be a primary reason why Milwaukee doesn’t have enough “skilled workers” to work in the city? I heard about the “brain drain”. Well, I think the “brain drain” is a sign of despair. Meaning that those who were skilled lets say in the UW system are most likely to move to other areas of the country in order to makeway for their paths of opportunity. But the question is how can Milwaukee, or Wisconsin in general, can turn this problem around? How can the class of 2006, turn this around? I know that by August 4th, I will be making “full-time” decisions. Part-time decision will probably not be a factor. This is all about more pay, benefits, insurance, unions, stock, vacation, no weekends and standard Monday – Friday weekly hours. But another question is where? If  I am very lucky, some National  companies with a local feel would hire me in Milwaukee, or Waukesha, Madison, Menomonie, Sheboygan or Green Bay. If not well, I may have to make a decision that would be “earth shattering for hard decisions.” – Sorry brewcity! If a job in Chicago, Twin Cities, Des Moines, Detroit or New York City would call be about a job offer, I would probably have to pray about it and make a choice. Even if it would effect my living opportunities in Milwaukee, or Wisconsin.
So let me end by saying this: regardless of what idiotic jabroni believes that taking a class in funky physics, or coordinating children groups does not get a job, think again! Without education, there can’t be employment to progress.

The Revial of ECW

Posted: June 24, 2006 in Wrestling

Holy Crap! ECW is back, under a new brand of the WWE. It seems that the pulse of ECW is not going away by a long shot. Definitely, it has risen under it’s new moniker, "the new breed unleashed". This new breed is compriesd of the old stuff of ECW’s extreme showings of Hardcore action, but also a new side in which some of the WWE superstars are now part of the new ECW movement. Take Kurt Angle, Big Show, RVD, Nunzio (back as Little Guido) and Chris Jericho.

Would I check out a live ECW event? Maybe. If it ever comes to Milwaukee’s US Celluar Arena, I know I’ll be one of the few who will check out the WWE’s extreme brand of wrestling.

In America, we as citizens have a right to say whatever we want and back it up. Surely, for some it is a challenge, but others may be questionable. Take for instance, at my Alma Mater, John Marshall High School on June 6, (6-6-6) Class Valecdictorian Matt Umstot was to give a speech to his senior class. I went on his myspace site and appears that Matt wanted to say the "extreme" version of his speech than the "edited" version. In the speech, Matt talks about  how the City of Milwaukee’s leaders, school system, racism, and others have been a letdown for the Brewcity’s image.  He even revealed that a friend of his was killed because of a t-shirt. He stated in his graduation speech on how it would not be an easy speech to review. And also in punishment, if the speech would have been given, he would have been yanked off stage and not graduate.

Let me say this as a 1995 Grad of Marshall, that I believe he earned the right and privilage to say what was on his mind. I know that it not easy these days, but again everyone has a right, even we don’t want to hear it. I would also believe that Matt probably stood up for what he believed in, although he was 18. Yo, age ain’t nothing but a number(to quote Aaliyah). Instead of turning off of what people like Matt have to say, we need to listen. Instead of pulling people off their big moments in life. And maybe if we just listen, we would probably  get the message. I know I feel the same way of changing the city for the better.

Now on to John Tenta. Back in the day he was known as Earthquake. And he was one of the best big men to wrestle for the WWE and WCW. He was a tag team champion along with Tugboat or Typhoon, which was known as the Natural Disasters. Sadly, John died this week at age 42 of cancer. I can hear that why would a former wrestler die so young under age 50? How could this have happen? Well, if God calls your number, that’s it. Nothing else. And age has nothing to do with it.

I don’t fear 06/06/06!

I don’t fear 06/06/06!

I just realized today is June 6th, 2006. Or in this case, 06/06/06. Or, 6-6-6. Truly for some, this is a day of "evil" in every 100 years or so. And I think The Omen may not have a factor in this day. But the thing is, I read, see and review about violence in our society that continues to plague our country and the world. Right now the biggest 6-6-6, is fighting the war on terrorism which was drilled in our country on 9/11. Another is when leaders such as MLK, JFK, Malcolm X were assasinated in the prime of their lives, in their 30’s.

Now, I know that there a quote that I have heard plenty of times in my young adult life, that constantly "deals with the devil." Let me give an example: "I would rather deal with the devil that I know, than the devil I don’t know." This quote is a strange statement, but just realizing it makes me ponder that it could be a given. For example, it could involve going back to an place of employment or worship that knows you than taking the opposite direction for new endeavors.

Getting back to the date of 6-6-06, or "666", anydate on the calendar can have a "date" like this. For example there are dates of 12/7, 9/11, 10/31, (D-Day) June 6th, 1944, or the most common date: Friday the 13th. There could also be days that can have a "666" effect if we lost a loved one tragically, a major job loss, criminal minded individuals, disease diagnosis that could lead to dying, or negative limitatons on positive people. But opposite wise, the next days can lead to better opportunities.

Also, I didn’t know this, but in the state of Michigan, there is a town called "Hell". No Joke! Here in Wisconsin, I sure you have heard of "Devil’s Lake." Out west, there is "Devil’s Tower" In music, oh that’s simple. I was riding in my car from work today and I listened to Run DMC’s CD entitled "Raising Hell." and I also listened to their comeback song "Back from Hell."  Here are more Wisconsin sites that have a "devilish" name to them:

666, The Number of the Beast

Rev 13:16 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:

Rev 13:17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

Rev 13:18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.

Rev 19:16 And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.

What’s Up Now?

Posted: June 1, 2006 in Reflections

Now since I don’t have a school to go right now, I think it’s time that I should prepare for the 63 days of sizzling, cool, and more importantly, summer. Speaking of school, I heard that the 99-year reign of North Division High School is closing on June 9th. Wait, that date is familiar. I remember that date is when I became a 38th Street School Graduate 18 years ago! It is sad in this day in age when schools (as legendary as North) close in this era, due to budget cuts, attendance, and etc.

I wasn’t a student at North Division but a couple of my family members, such as my father, uncles, some church members, and older/younger cousins are North Division Grads. My father once mentioned North Division was real. I’m assuming that the school was the top contender way back. Almost like Tech was back in the 90’s.  (If you were a rival school, you hated them!) I met a band teacher named Barry Applewhite back in ’95, before my graduation at Marshall took place. It was at a High School Honors band concert. I remember taking field trips to North Division way back in the 90’s for college fairs, or high school fairs, I think. Well, I remember back at Marshall, around ’93 our football team beat North Division’s football team at our homecoming that year. I would like to comment that North Division was contender to all schools including Marshall.

On the flipside, my first 3-and a half weeks as a UW-Stout Grad has been on the rise. Everyday I wake up as a Stout Grad-to-be to think as if I am living a dream. Well apparently, the dream is now a reality, and the potential is now a realization. I wonder if I had any regrets? NOT! Now, it’s just going out to the world and showcasing my skills and talents as a regular person.

What is up with the violence again? I hope we as a community can rise up from this. I don’t want to go through another experiece of summer madness of deaths. Last year was too much.

Well, one can’t greve forever! I think it is time for all memories to begin and life to move on.
